Freeware Friday: Merry Gear Solid 2

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

Two years ago, there was a particularly funny and well-made holiday game called Merry Gear Solid. It was short but sweet, and the developer decided to go the distance with the sequel. Merry Gear Solid 2 is the sequel, and it is one of the best parodies of the Metal Gear franchise we've seen yet. Hilarious and fun, it only has a few minor problems that hold it back from being even better than the games it is satirizing. It's a must play, especially during the holiday season when the nature of its absurdity is best conveyed.

Hideo Kojima: games and movies will eventually become one

According to Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, video games and movies will inevitably merge into one conglomerate. We're astonished that Kojima, who certainly loathes inserting an excess of cutscenes into his games, would suggest such a thing.

In a recent interview, Reuters writer Scott Hills mentioned that games are becoming equivalent to film and asked Kojima if, due to such comparisons, game developers were finally getting the proper recognition they deserve. Kojima responded positively, saying that "When entertainment becomes digital, there can be a great collaboration between games and other kinds of entertainment like movies or even novels. All these things might form together to form a coherent medium."

Though he admitted an inability to venture a guess as to when such a bonding might take place, Kojima was adamant in his belief that the "convergence will happen sooner or later."
