GAMEScon to challenge Leipzig Games Convention

Earlier this week we reported on the massive success of the 2008 Leipzig Games Convention which announced that the five day trade and consumer video/PC game event in Leipzig, Germany had brought in 203,000 attendees last week. The organizers announced their 2009 dates and even hinted at plans for a North American expansion.

Well, the organizers of the Cologne based GAMEScon came out with their own statement, basically saying, "Leipzig is doomed." The event was announced last year by the industry consortium BIU and will be held in Cologne on September 9-13. Gamasutra reports that the organizers of the event claim to have broad industry support, adding, "Whatever happens in Germany in 2009 outside of Cologne cannot claim to represent this sector." Ouch. Them's fightin' words. We should see in a few months which German games convention comes out on top.

Project Origin Trailer dials up the intensity

The latest blood-soaked trailer for Project Origin runs through a patchwork of cinematic and action sequences. Not much new is revealed, but the trailer, which features up-close flashes of monsters and bodies exploding from heavy gunfire, should be watched in the dark.

Left 4 Dead video leaves you hungry for more

You can never get enough high-intensity zombie blasting action, but we'll have to settle for watching trailers until Left 4 Dead finally releases. This trailer shows what it takes to take on a rush of zombies clamoring to rip you and your team apart, and the firepower it takes to take out a mutant boss. Left 4 Dead will let players team up as a group of survivors against waves of undead, but real players can also take control of the powerful bosses to wreak havoc. The game is currently scheduled to release this November, so players better learn to play together or die alone.

Mirror's Edge video runs through a ton of gameplay

Whether you can't get enough of the spectacular graphics from Mirror's Edge or just a running fanatic, watching this video is definitely worth your while. It's about three minutes of a player running, climbing, jumping and sliding through a multilevel stage - taking out a sniper along the way. There's a lot of shaky action that could cause motion sickness, but focusing on the dot in the middle the screen should help a little.

Bionic Commando struts its stuff at Leipzig

Bionic Commando Rearmed just released last week, which gives some room to shift people's attention toward the next Bionic Commando, as we can see in this video shown at the Leipzig Games Convention. The upcoming game completely sheds the 2D trappings of the original and features action and powerful attacks in an open 3D environment. Some new screenshots from the game have also been released.

Leipzig Game Con staying put

Our fellow gamers across the pond don't have to worry about the GC Developers Conference in Lepzig going anywhere soon. Leipziger Messe boss Wolfgang Marzin shot down rumors by saying, "The GC – Games Convention is not moving."

And why would they? Project director Peggy Schönbeck told Next-Gen earlier this month that GC '08 will be the biggest show they've ever had with more than 500 exhibitors expected to attend. And the business area is set to expand by 40,000 square meters (a 25% increase over last year).

Rumors began when German publishers association BIU agreed to a deal with Koelnmesse to host GAMESCom, a new Cologne-based games trade show. based on this agreement it was believed that '08 would be the last year that the GC would take place in Germany. So rest easy mein freunde! This years Leipzig GC will be held from August 20 - 24.
