Review: Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadowbroker

There's little doubt that out of all the DLC expansions that have come out so far, Lair of the Shadowbroker is the one that's been a long time coming. Mass Effect players who chose Liara as romantic interest in the first game can revisit, and perhaps rekindle, that past relationship. Or they can choose to bring it to its conclusion if they chose to pursue a new romance in the sequel. Beyond following-up on a long lost relationship, the campaign ties up loose ends that span both games. In pursuing the reclusive Shadowbroker, players pull the mask one of the most mysterious characters in the series while bringing closure to one of the most significant side stories in Mass Effect 2.

New Mass Effect 2 PC DLC now fixed and available

For a few hours this afternoon, folks who paid their $10 to download the latest PC Mass Effect 2 DLC mini-expansion Lair of the Shadow Broker got 1.5 gigs worth of zeros instead. Developer BioWare pulled that file from its DLC downloads page a few hours later.

Now it seems everything is back to normal. While there was no explanation as to what happened earlier this afternoon, BioWare's Chris Priestly has now posted word on the Mass Effect 2 message boards that the mini-expansion, " ... should now be fixed for the PC and should be able to be downloaded now." You can now purchase and grab it from the game's DLC web site. People who purchased the earlier faulty file should be able to download the correct one with no penalty.

New Mass Effect 2 DLC PC file recalled (it's full of zeros; no kidding) [Update]

If you have yet to download the newly released Mass Effect 2 DLC, Lair of the Shadow Broker, you might want to hold off for a bit. Some folks who have tried to install the downloadable expansion to the BioWare developed sci-fi RPG title that have Windows 7 64-bit operating systems installed have been hit with compatibility errors.

Our own reviewer for the DLC encountered this error when he tried to install it on his PC and the Mass Effect 2 message boards are now filled with posts from PC gamers who have encountered the same error. We will update this post when we get some info from BioWare on this issue.

Update: BioWare's Chris Priestly has made a message board post basically saying the dev team is aware of the issue and is working on fixing it.

Update 2: Priestly has written another message board post stating that the incorrect PC DLC file has been removed from the download section. People who downloaded the faulty file (which is 1.5 Gigs of zeros; no, we are not kidding) will not be charged again when the correct file is back up. Priestly states, "We do not have a more accurate eta for the correct PC DLC, but when we do I will let you know."

You get to play "clean up" man Jimmy in a series of missions (over 30, in fact) that will show just how much you can do in terms of assassination and blowing lots of stuff up in the game.

Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC due on September 7

Developer BioWare's latest DLC mini-expansion for its sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 2 now has a release date and price. The previously announced Lair of the Shadowbroker is now set for a downloadable release on September 7. PC owners will be able to grab it for 800 BioWare points (about $10) making it the most expensive DLC expansion yet released for the game.

Will it be worth the money? Well the DLC does allow you to play with the character Liara T'Soni as she tries to track down the title character. Not only is this a new adventure with new achievements, the DLC description says it will give your"the chance to continue a relationship with Liara." Sounds like there will be some ... stuff involved.

Next Mass Effect 2 DLC enters The Lair of the Shadow Broker

It will soon be payback time in the Mass Effect universe. Developer BioWare has just announced plans to offer up a new DLC expansion pack for the RPG sequel Mass Effect 2 that deals with events that actually begin at the start of the game. You know, when Commander Shepard died.

The DLC, titled Lair of the Shadow Broker, follows up on Liara T'Soni's efforts to recover Shepard's body from the Shadow Broker. But now that Shepard is alive and kicking (or shooting, actually) again its time to go after the mysterious figure to make things right. There's no word yet when the DLC will be released or how much it will cost.
