Save the kingdom in Paradise Blue

Bad independent role-playing games are a dime a dozen. Every schmuck with RPG Maker can toss together a bad RPG and unleash it upon the unsuspecting internet. However, it takes a different kind of person to actually create a decent RPG. Or in most cases, a group of people. Such is the case with Paradise Blue, a love song to the halycon days of the SNES RPG. While not quite as prohibitively long as games like Final Fantasy 6, Paradise Blue is definitely no short game.

Paradise Blue revolves around two factions fighting after it is found out that the king is near death. The game takes place on a small island, and includes a job and combat system much like games in the Final Fantasy series. However, it also has a quest journal that informs you of where you need to go and what to do, which is a much needed addition to traditional RPGs like this.

Freeware Friday: Shut Up And Jam Gaiden

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

There are some games made to just be weird, hilarious, and satirical all at the same time. They are few and far between, but it's great when they show up on the gaming radar. It means that there's a new hilarious game to play, and that's always a good thing. The game this week is one of these kinds of games. It's a satire of Japanese role-playing games, internet culture, and the absurdity of sequels. For a good laugh at the expense of these different things, Barkley, Shut Up And Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the HoopZ Barkley SaGa is the best.

E3 08: Square Enix's The Last Remnant trailer is JRPG-ish

Yesterday, esteemed Japanese RPG developer Square-Enix announced that its new game The Last Remnant will be released on the PC, albeit a bit later than the console versions. This is pretty interesting news, since JRPGs and the PC platform don't usually get together. Some folks think that's a good thing, but others wish they saw more of the genre. If you're exclusively a PC gamer, we'll bet you haven't had much or any exposure to The Last Remnant. Well, this short E3 trailer should remedy that.

It's very JRPG-like, with a young, strapping swordsman hero, fantastic magic, Anime-like art -- the works. If you like what you see, though, you should check out an older trailer called "Soulbound," which was released long before the PC version was announced. It has some of the same content, but it's quite a bit longer and it features a peek at the combat system. We've embedded that for you beneath the cut. Enjoy!
