Interview: We chat with the founder of Joystick Labs

There are a number of ways game developers can find money to help fund their projects; through publishers or awards, grants and more. But what about actual help during the development process to make the game better and to establish contacts in the game industry that will allow the developers to sell the game?

That's the plan of the newly announced Joystick Labs, a Durham, North Carolina-based company that was officially announced this week. The company will not only pick games and development teams to help fund their creations but also to mentor them in various aspects of game development and business. Big Download got to ask some questions about Joystick Labs to with the company's co-founder Juan Benito (who previously worked at developers like Red Storm and Atomic Games) to find out a little more about its plans.

Joystick Labs launches; will help fund and mentor new downloadable games

If you are a indie game developer you know one of the biggest challenges in making a game is getting the money to start development in the first place. Today a new company has announced it plans to help fledging downloadable game developers with money and other help to create these kinds of games.

The North Carolina-based Joystick Labs has announced that it is taking applications for its first round. The application deadline is August 13. Those developers who are chosen for the first round will start a 12-week accelerator program on September 7 where the teams will be "given the seed funding, mentorship and access to technology required to create and produce cutting-edge digitally distributed video games." Developers chosen for the program will retain ownership in the games they create through the program.
