Puzzle Quest 2 announced; PC release still to be revealed

Last week GamePro leaked the news that Puzzle Quest 2 was in the works. Today D3Publisher officially announced that they would be handling the release of the puzzle-RPG game for developer Infinite Interactive. The game is due for release in the spring of 2010 but at the moment the only announced platforms are for the Nintendo DS console and the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade.

So what about a PC version? We contacted D3Publisher's PR rep who replied back, "At the moment we have announced Puzzle Quest 2 will be on XBLA and DS. We are possibly looking at other platforms/skus but no decision has been made at this time." We are betting that they will make the right decision and bring the sequel to this ground-breaking addictive game to our hard drive sometime in 2010.

Puzzle Quest 2 revealed; details coming soon

When we reviewed the new Square Enix-Popcap fantasy RPG-puzzle game Gyromancer recently we mentioned that the game that it most closely resembled, the first Puzzle Quest title from developer Infinite Interactive "was released over three years ago but offers a significantly richer experience and costs less than Gyromancer." Now comes word that Infinite Interactive is indeed working on Puzzle Quest 2, the first true sequel to that unique genre-bending title.

The first word on the game comes from GamePro's web site who states that their January 2010 print magazine issue (due in newstands in December) will have the first detailed preview of the game. However it showed off the lone screenshot that you see above as a teaser. Infinite Interactive has made several puzzle-style games since the original Puzzle Quest, including the sci-fi themed Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, but will the return to the game that started it all for them be worth the wait?

You can download the game now for $9.99.

Two other older games are now available for $5.99 each. One is Cannon Fodder, a 1994 tactical action game from developer Sensible Software and publisher Codemasters. Review: Puzzle Quest: Galactrix

Players blast off into the future with Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, the sci-fi follow-up to the first fantasy themed Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. Like its predecessor, Galactrix is a role-playing game that uses different variations of a gem-matching mini game for everything from combat to crafting. Apart from its setting, the sequel features some significant changes from the first game, the least of which being a circular board using hexagonal pieces. The plot involves a far-future humanity after it has spread out into the stars, met different alien races, and conquered them. In an age of relative peace, a new mysterious threat arises, revealed in number of cryptic cut scenes.

Gamespot hosts Puzzle Adventure preview

Gamespot writer Ricardo Torres recently had the chance to go hands-on with the PC version of Neopets Puzzle Adventure, a Neopets / Puzzle Quest hybrid. After their time with the casual title, Gamespot confessed to being "downright shocked at how well the blend of Puzzle Quest and Neopets is working out."

Players will be able to choose from over 12 different species, each with typical RPG stats such as strength and defense. After customizing your character's name and appearance, you'll be able to explore the world of Neopia. A diverse landscape spanning various cultures, Gamespot's jaunt "featured an Asian theme, but there will also be a tropical island and pirate, desert, and futuristic locations."

Combat is loosely based on Othello, with the player flipping markers on each battlefield to his color. Collecting gems allows the player to use either a sword or a shield, each offering different benefits. Gems can also be used to "unleash your Petpets--pets for your Neopet--which function as spells. You can equip several different pets, each with its own unique attacks that you can level up via a minigame." Over 150 different Petpets can be found in Neopets Puzzle Adventure.

Gamespot walked away from the preview with positive feelings, stating that "Infinite Interactive's ridiculously addictive Puzzle Quest formula looks to be a smart fit with the license," which should be good news to RPGers who might otherwise be inclined to turn away from the casual-oriented game. Gamespot also stated that, according to Capcom, the PC version will definitely feature online play.

Capcom to launch Neopets Puzzle Adventure this winter

Neopets is the cute web based kids game with lots of cuddly creatures to collect and play with. Soon the franchise will expand into more genres thanks to publisher Capcom and developer Infinite Interactive (best known as the creators of the Puzzle Quest series) with their just announced game Neopets Puzzle Adventure.

The game, which is currently scheduled for release this winter for the PC and other platforms, is actually based on the classic board game Reversi. With 150 pets, over 150 quests and a number of mini-games, it looks like this will have a bit more depth than the normal puzzle game. Once more, players can earn special codes by achieving certain goals in the game. Those codes can later be used on the Neopets.com web site to unlock exclusive items in the web based game. Our sister site Joystiq has a hands-on preview of the game for you to check out right now.
