Defense Grid: The Awakening to get several new downloadable maps in June

Released way back in December 2008, the sci-fi tower defense game Defense Grid: The Awakening continues to be supported by its developer Hidden Path Entertainment. Today the developer announced plans to release not one, not two, but four downloadable map packs for the game under the umbrella title Defense Grid: Resurgence. Each map pack will be released on a weekly basis starting on Wednesday, June 2.

Each map pack will contain two new maps for the game (for a total of eight maps) with each pack costing 99 cents to download via Steam and Direct2Drive. The map packs will contain a campaign mode and four challenge modes and will also come with new achievements and leaderboards. You can check out descriptions of each map at the game's official web site.

Counter-Strike Source beta released with lots of additions

It's been a long time since there's been a major content or features update for Counter-Strike Source but today Valve has released a new beta version (via Steam, natch) of their classic team-based multiplayer shooter that has a ton of new features and additions. Once the beta test is complete the new features will be added to the regular edition of the game.

The beta, which was developed with the help of Hidden Path Entertainment (Defense Grid The Awakening) includes a new domination and revenge system, a new end-of-round display (including "interesting fact about a player") new lifetime player stats, and the addition of 144 Steam achievements.

Defense Grid: The Awakening gets new free mini-expansion

One of our favorite downloadable games of 2008 was Defense Grid: The Awakening, the sci-fi tower defense game from developer Hidden Path Entertainment. It's been a long while since the game has had any patches but this week the game got a major new update via Steam that includes a new mini-expansion for the game.

The free expansion, titled Defense Grid: Borderlands (and yes we know; it's an odd one) adds four new maps to the game and also adds thre new challenge modes (Super Grinder, Campaign Reversed, and Poison Core) to the entire game. It also adds support for Steam's leaderboards features. From what we can gather this may be the first of a series of mini-expansions for the game. You can purchase Defense Grid now for $9.99.

Steam offers up Defense Grid for just $5

Can you spare five bucks for a terrific tower defense game? If you can then let us direct you to the Steam PC download service. They just happen to have such a title, Defense Grid: The Awakening, available to purchase and download. And from now until May 13 you can download for just $5.

We've talked about how good this game is before but there really isn't an excuse at the moment for you not to buy this game from Hidden Path Entertainment. With 20 levels, lots of tower defense upgrades, a single player campaign, special challenge modes and of course lots of aliens to blow up we know this title is right up any PC gamer's alley.

Defense Grid: The Awakening coming to retail stores

One of our favorite PC games released in 2008 was Defense Grid: The Awakening, the tower defense title from developer Hidden Path Entertainment. The game's been available via digital download for some time but this week Aspyr Media announced plans to release the game to retail stores.

Just in case you need a reminder, Defense Grid is a sci-fi theme strategy game where you must place defenses around your base to defense aliens who seem to want to attack for some odd reason. The downloadable version contains 20 levels, 15 different kinds of enemies and 10 different types of tower defenses, each with three upgrades. There's no word yet if the retail version, due out this summer, will have any extra content.

Catalog games on Steam; new Defense Grid sale; Left 4 Dead sale extended

Valve's Steam service continues to expand it's already large catalog of games. This past weekend the Steam library grew even more with a boatload of older game titles from publishers Ubisoft and Codemasters. On the Ubisoft side, you can download and purchase full versions of Lost, Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Driver: Parallel Lives. Codemasters adds a whopping eight older games on Steam including Second Sight, Maelstrom and Soldiers: Heroes of WWII.

Steam has also announced that from now until March 2 you can purchase and download the excellent defense-strategy game Defense Grid: The Awakening for just $14.99. That's a 25 percent discount off its normal price. And their previous 50 percent weekend deal for Left 4 Dead has been extended; you can still get the zombie co-op shooter at the smaller price until tomorrow.

Review: Defense Grid: The Awakening

Real-time strategy fans are well familiar with the "turtle" tactic. There's something immensely satisfying in planning and building up a defense strong enough to repel almost any invading force. Defense Grid: The Awakening capitalizes on this feeling by being a puzzle action strategy game based entirely on the turtling. Being generally defensive RTS players to start with, we couldn't help getting completely hooked.

Interview: Hidden Path talks about Defense Grid

Downloadable original games are not only getting more and more popular but are receiving more production value as well. A perfect example of this trend is the upcoming PC title Defense Grid: The Awakening. This sci-fi strategy-action game from indie developer Hidden Path Entertainment looks very impressive in previously released screenshots and its use of the tower defense style of gameplay gives the game a unique slant.

The game is due for release next month but Big Download got Hidden Path's CEO Jeff Pobst to answer our questions about Defense Grid, including more info on its gameplay modes, when we can expect a demo, plans for downloadable content and more.
