Portal 2 ARG-Potato Sack indie developers talk about their work

With the Portal 2 ARG event now completed, some of the Potato Sack indie game developers involved in the unique marketing event for Valve's puzzle-shooter are taking about their involvement. Two Tribes, who had two games in the the ARG (Toki Tori and RUSH) posted up an article on their web site that talks about putting the Portal 2 themed content into their games over the length of the ARG.

Othe developers like Gaijin Games (Bit.Trip Beat) and Hidden Path Entertainment (Defense Grid The Awakening) also talk about their work on the ARG which started out with Valve inviting all the developers last December to work on the project. The result was a ton of extra free content for all 13 games (levels, puzzles, and more). Much of it will remain in the game after the ARG is finished.

Defense Grid: The Awakening to get several new downloadable maps in June

Released way back in December 2008, the sci-fi tower defense game Defense Grid: The Awakening continues to be supported by its developer Hidden Path Entertainment. Today the developer announced plans to release not one, not two, but four downloadable map packs for the game under the umbrella title Defense Grid: Resurgence. Each map pack will be released on a weekly basis starting on Wednesday, June 2.

Each map pack will contain two new maps for the game (for a total of eight maps) with each pack costing 99 cents to download via Steam and Direct2Drive. The map packs will contain a campaign mode and four challenge modes and will also come with new achievements and leaderboards. You can check out descriptions of each map at the game's official web site.

Counter-Strike Source beta released with lots of additions

It's been a long time since there's been a major content or features update for Counter-Strike Source but today Valve has released a new beta version (via Steam, natch) of their classic team-based multiplayer shooter that has a ton of new features and additions. Once the beta test is complete the new features will be added to the regular edition of the game.

The beta, which was developed with the help of Hidden Path Entertainment (Defense Grid The Awakening) includes a new domination and revenge system, a new end-of-round display (including "interesting fact about a player") new lifetime player stats, and the addition of 144 Steam achievements.

Defense Grid: The Awakening gets new free mini-expansion

One of our favorite downloadable games of 2008 was Defense Grid: The Awakening, the sci-fi tower defense game from developer Hidden Path Entertainment. It's been a long while since the game has had any patches but this week the game got a major new update via Steam that includes a new mini-expansion for the game.

The free expansion, titled Defense Grid: Borderlands (and yes we know; it's an odd one) adds four new maps to the game and also adds thre new challenge modes (Super Grinder, Campaign Reversed, and Poison Core) to the entire game. It also adds support for Steam's leaderboards features. From what we can gather this may be the first of a series of mini-expansions for the game. You can purchase Defense Grid now for $9.99.

Defense Grid: The Awakening trailer launches into retail stores

Defense Grid: The Awakening has been out since last December via digital download outlets like Steam. However, the game designers, Hidden Path are going to take a big leap by releasing a full boxed retail version through publisher Aspyr Media. Defense Grid, a sci-fi themed tower defense game, was one of Big Download's favorite games of 2008 and offers many hours of addictive fun. The demo can be downloaded here.

"Defense Grid: The Awakening finds humanity struggling against an invasion by a relentless alien force. The player is tasked with defending key outposts with the aid of ancient, but powerful, defense towers and an artificial intelligence construct. Intuitive controls and a range of objectives make it fun for players of any skill to progress through the 20 story levels, and the dozens of additional challenge modes. Ten different tower types, each with unique strengths, allow for multiple strategies as players scheme to take down wave after wave of invading creatures, each more powerful than the previous."

Interview: Hidden Path talks about Defense Grid

Downloadable original games are not only getting more and more popular but are receiving more production value as well. A perfect example of this trend is the upcoming PC title Defense Grid: The Awakening. This sci-fi strategy-action game from indie developer Hidden Path Entertainment looks very impressive in previously released screenshots and its use of the tower defense style of gameplay gives the game a unique slant.

The game is due for release next month but Big Download got Hidden Path's CEO Jeff Pobst to answer our questions about Defense Grid, including more info on its gameplay modes, when we can expect a demo, plans for downloadable content and more.
