Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - January 15-16

Tomorrow is a holiday here in the US which means that news might be slower than usual. However things will pick up later this week, thanks to a couple of press events that are popping up.

Hero Core blasts its way through to Tetron

Daniel Remar (of Iji fame) has released a sequel to one of his older games recently, and like his other games, it's freeware. Hero Core follows Flip hero as he faces off against his nemesis Cruiser Tetron for the last time. Along the way he blasts his way through a huge assortment of enemies and bosses, all in the name of ending the conflict for the absolute last time.

Those familiar with Metroid will be right at home with Hero Core. The game plays in a very non-linear fashion, and you can, in fact, fight the final boss from the very beginning. It's not very advisable, though, and there are plenty of ways to upgrade yourself. Once you finish the game, a bunch of extras unlock as well, adding greatly to the replayability. It's pretty difficult, though, so try not to get too flustered or frustrated!

Commentators discuss the new hero in Prince of Persia

This video for Prince of Persia features a number of different people talking about the brand new hero for Prince of Persia. He's unlike any prince we've known before. Viewers might recognize one of the commentators, Libe Goad, from our sister site GameDaily. Prince of Persia is scheduled to release on December 2nd for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, then on the PC a week later on December 9. The game can also be pre-ordered on Steam, which also offers a complete Prince of Persia pack, so you can decide for yourself how different this new prince is.

Danny Glover backs new game with Arab action hero

Lethal Weapon co-star and all-around-revered-actor Danny Glover has joined the board of directors at Colourblind Entertainment, a United Arab Emirates-based studio developing video games for several world regions. The company is working on a game called Sharq Warriors.

Sharq Warriors' protagonist is an Arab man named Sami, who will fight to save his country and his sister. "Many existing games feature Western soldiers shooting Arabs, Afghans and other ethnic 'enemies'," said fellow board member Riz Khan. "We're introducing different types of heroes and 'Sami' is the first of them but he fights corruption, not people of another race."

This is an admirable endeavor, and we're looking forward to seeing how it turns out. The game is primarily intended for the Middle-eastern market but a demo is on its way to the internet. Glover also heads up the activist film studio Louverture Films, which will be working with Colourblind to expand the Sami franchise into other media.
