Interview: We chat with Crenetic's CEO about Trapped Dead

Zombies continue to be the new black as far as game design is concerned. More games are using some version of the undead as its major theme. One upcoming game that has zombies as its central feature is Trapped Dead, a tactical strategy game where players encounter the infected during a visit to what appears at first to be a nice small town.

The game comes from German developer Crenetic and will be published by Headup Games with Meridian4 handling the game's digital publishing here in the US. Big Download got the CEO of Crenetic, Carsten Widera-Trombach, to answer our questions about the game which should be released sometime in the first quarter of 2011.

Trapped Dead trailer annihilates zombies with extreme prejudice

The zombie genre is an already massive one, and there seems to be no end to the amount of zombie games being produced. That doesn't mean a new one can spring up and surprise us, however. Trapped Dead is a tactical RTS that looks very similar to some other strategy classics, such as the highly-regarded Commandos. This trailer shows off the gameplay for the title, and we have to say that it looks almost exactly like the old tactics games of yore. Games like Desperadoes, Commandos, or Baldur's Gate. We're definitely intrigued by it, but we're cautious, since there's just so many zombie games now.

Trapped Dead coming in January; demo planned for release in December

Trapped Dead may be another zombie-based game but at least it seems to be an interesting one. This week publisher Meridian4 announced that it would have the digital download rights to the Headup Games-developed title with a release sometime in January. Furthermore a demo for Trapped Dead is due out in December.

The game, which was first announced last April, is a third-person isometric strategy title as two college kids encounter the undead while passing through a small town in the 1980s. Players will have to control the kids as they use a variety of weapons to battle the zombies. The game will also support co-op with up to four players.

Headup Games' titles coming to US retail stores

German-based game developer Headup Games is perhaps best known to US audiences for its sci-fi turn based strategy game Future Wars. Now Headup Games will soon be released via retail stores in a new agreement with new US game publisher Collective Mindz.

According to the email press release, the agreement includes Headup Games' previously released product, including Future Wars, along with its upcoming zombie-themed tactical strategy game Trapped Dead that's due out in early 2011. Headup Games previously announced an digital download publishing agreement with Meridian4. Big Download contacted Merdidian4 and a spokesperson stated that the agreement with Headup Games is still active, saying, "We feel that the additional exposure the games will receive by going into retail will help everyone involved and will get these great games in front of a larger gaming audience."

Trapped Dead announced

Are you ready for yet another zombie game? Headup Games hopes you are. The German developer who recently released the turn-based sci-fi strategy game Future Wars go in a new direction for their newly announced title Trapped Dead, a tactical real time strategy game where you have to deal with the undead.

Set in the early 1980s in a fictional small town in Missouri, the game centers on two college boys who find themselves dealing with the local folk who have been infected with a zombie-like virus. The game will also support co-op for up to four players. The game's official web site is already up but it only shows a Flash-based trailer with a few screenshots. Trapped Dead is looking to eat you, er, be released this November.

Review: Future Wars

If you've played any of the games from the Advance Wars series on the Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS, then you already have an idea of how Future Wars plays. This PC turn based strategy game lets players build and manage a variety of units to spread out across the map while factoring in terrain bonuses for each move. Future Wars also features very nice looking, brightly colored, animated 3D graphics and is relatively easy to learn. However, the game's general lack of features can make for a very unsatisfying experience.
