Path of Exile offers up a trailer showing the Duelist

It's been a little while since we have gotten an update on Path of Exile, the upcoming free-to-play action-RPG from developer Grinding Gear Studios. A few days ago the development team released a new gameplay trailer showing off one of the game's six character classes, the melee-based Duelist.

The trailer shows off more of the action-packed game with lots of different attacks and combos shown for the Duelist character. According to a new interview at GamePro, Path of Exile is currently scheduled to begin closed beta testing sometime in August with a launch before the end of 2011.

Interview: We chat with Grinding Gear Games' co-founder about Path of Exile

While many of us have been waiting patiently for Blizzard to release the next game in the Diablo series, other smaller game developers are using this wait to offer up their own take on the dark action-RPG genre. Newly revealed game developer Grinding Gear Games recently announced its debut title, the free-to-play game Path of Exile.

Will this game make all of us forget about Diablo III. Of course not, but Path of Exile is still looking pretty cool all of its own and it won't cost an arm and a leg to play. Big Download got Grinding Gears Games co-founder Chris Wilson to tell us more about its plans for the game.

Path of Exile announced

The online action-RPG genre is getting a new entry in early 2011 with the just announced Path of Exile, the debut title from New Zealand-based development studio Grinding Gear Games. The title is designed to be free to play (with microtransations) on a persistent online server and as you can see from the screenshots the title has some old-school Diablo-like art style. Indeed the game's web site says that players can expect a lot of blood and gore in Path of Exile.

Other features in the game include random generated maps, up to eight players in the regular campaign mode, support for Player Vs Player combat, tons of different skills and more. After the game is officially launched, players can expect a series of free expansion packs.
