Review: Greed Corp

With its cartoon steampunk inspired graphics and challenging gameplay that combines puzzle solving with strategy, it's hard not to like Greed Corp. Like many great games, the fundamental concept is pretty easy to pick up. The game board comprised of a number of hexagonal pillars that can be lowered and destroyed. Up to four players take turns moving and/or producing units and placing structures, all with the goal of being the last one standing. Certain actions, like mining an area for resources, cause pillars to descend until they fall away. Players can use the destructible environment to their advantage by creating isolated islands or sabotage opponents sitting on them.

Greed Corp trailer strip mines for money

No, we don't mean that it strips and mines at the same time. That falls more into the realm of poker. Greed Corp is a fairly popular Xbox Live title that has made its way to the PC, and this trailer shows off the interesting core concept. It's somewhat of a board game, and involves the strip mining (and subsequent destruction of) the varied terrain. However, as you use the terrain for your troops, it quickly becomes a game of managing a classic risk vs reward scheme. Do you take out your territory for the money and the minor advantage, or do you keep it to eliminate your opponents with a vastly superior army? Greed Corp comes to Steam, achievements and all, on December 10th.

Greed Corp to finally arrive on PC December 10

It's taken a lot longer than first announced but on December 10 the PC port of the unusual turn-based strategy game Greed Corp will be released on Steam. Developed by W!Games and released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles earlier this year, the PC port won't be a straight port but will contain some improvements compared to the console version.

Those improvements include a revamped tutorial, changes to the game's campaign mode and the addition of Steam achievements. Recently it was announced that a shooter title Gatling Gears, set in the same Mistbound universe as Greed Corp, will be released via download for the PC in spring 2011.

Gatling Gears announced for release in spring 2011

Get ready for yet another late night game announcement from Electronic Arts. The publisher revealed tonight it would release Gatling Gears, a "twin-stick shooter" game from Amsterdam-based indie developer Vanguard Entertainment. The game takes place in the same "universe" as the turn-based strategy game Greed Corp. The development team for that game, W!Games, merged earlier this year with the two founders of Guerrilla Games to form Vanguard Entertainment.

Gatling Gears may be a shooter title but will still retain some elements of Greed Corp including features like "collapsing land, walker units and warring factions." The game is due for release for the PC and other platforms in spring 2011.

Headup Games' titles coming to US retail stores

German-based game developer Headup Games is perhaps best known to US audiences for its sci-fi turn based strategy game Future Wars. Now Headup Games will soon be released via retail stores in a new agreement with new US game publisher Collective Mindz.

According to the email press release, the agreement includes Headup Games' previously released product, including Future Wars, along with its upcoming zombie-themed tactical strategy game Trapped Dead that's due out in early 2011. Headup Games previously announced an digital download publishing agreement with Meridian4. Big Download contacted Merdidian4 and a spokesperson stated that the agreement with Headup Games is still active, saying, "We feel that the additional exposure the games will receive by going into retail will help everyone involved and will get these great games in front of a larger gaming audience."

Greed Corp coming to the PC this summer

Last year Amsterdam-based game developer W!Games announced Greed Corp, their unique strategy game where you can actually destroy land areas in addition to claiming them. The game was announced for the PC and other platforms last November and has since been released via download for both Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network.

Today it was revealed that the PC version is finally set for release sometime this summer. Publisher The Games Company will release the game to retail stores for the price of $19.99. The PC port will have some new features including a new tutorial, improved graphics, and an "improved campaign."

Upcoming game Greed Corp doesn't just occupy land, it destroys it

New strategy games are always looking to put in something different to the table. Some games due away with resource management while others have an RPG-lite system. In the upcoming downloadable game Greed Corps, their twist is that the land beneath can not only be taken over it can be destroyed.

The title, from Amsterdam-based developer W!Games, has a cartoony art style as you control one of four factions who are trying to take over this fantastical world. While you can defend the land you occupy you can also topple the land of your opponent (the land just disappears into some kind of fog when destroyed; there's no word as to where it actually goes). Look for both a single player campaign with 24 maps and multiplayer modes for up to four players in the final version which will be released for the PC and other platforms in early 2010.
