Ghost Recon Future Soldier won't make first quarter 2011 release date

Ghost Recon Future Soldier, the upcoming and latest game in Ubisoft's tactical shooter series, was first announced for a fall 2010 release and then pushed back to a first quarter 2011 timeline. Now Ubisoft's latest financial press release have announced that the game won't make that release date after all.

Instead Ubisoft has decided to move Ghost Recon Future Soldier to sometime in the publisher's 2012 fiscal year which in calendar year times starts on April 1, 2011 and ends on March 31, 2012. There's no word on why the game has been delayed yet again but at least the first quarter is a bit less crowded now.

Ubisoft confirms layoffs at Red Storm studio

Layoff news continues to hit the game industry. Today Kotaku reports that Ubisoft has give notices to 38 members of its Red Storm Entertainment studio in Cary, North Carolina. The story did not say how many team members remain at Red Storm, which created the Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon tactical shooter series.

A spokesperson for Ubisoft said the layoffs were due to "a realignment of production priorities" at the publisher but added that Red Storm team members affected by the layoffs will be given a chance " to consider positions in other Ubisoft studios." Red Storm's current project is working on the multiplayer features for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier which is due out in the first quarter of 2011.

Ghost Recon's live action short film gets preview at Comic-Con

As we reported a few weeks ago, Ubisoft had a panel at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con that not only had a discussion and demo of the upcoming shooter Ghost Recon Future Soldier but also showed and discussed a preview of the previously announced Ghost Recon-themed live action short film.

The one minute preview of the movie, which has the title Alpha, showed members of the Ghost team taking out an Eastern European military installation. GameSpot reports that the movie showed some high production values and "will certainly appeal to fans of the high-action, big-explosion action film genre." And yes, there will be Ghost team members cloaked in the movie like they will be for Future Soldier. Both game and movie will be released in 2011.

Ghost Recon live action short movie trailer to premiere at Comic-Con

One interesting panel that's happening at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 24 that we missed mentioning on Saturday was one that involves Ubisoft's Ghost Recon franchise. You may remember a few months ago that Ubisoft plans to release a live action short movie based on the military shooter franchise. It's being designed in part to promote the upcoming release of Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

On July 24 at Comic-Con Ubisoft will hold a panel where the first trailer for the live action short film will be shown for the first time. The panel will also have a live demo of Ghost Recon Future Soldier which is due for release in the first quarter of 2011.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier delayed until first quarter of 2011

The game was officially announced just a few months ago but already Ubisoft has announced a delay in the release of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The latest game in the military shooter franchise was originally scheduled for release before the end of 2010 but during its financial conference call with investors the publisher now admits the game won't be out until the first quarter of 2011.

The apparent reason has nothing to do with the game's development but rather to the "competitive environment" of the fall 2010 time frame. Without the publisher naming names, we can assume Ubisoft doesn't want to put their new Ghost Recon game up directly against Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops and EA's revival of the Medal of Honor franchise, both of which are due out this fall.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier live action trailer is, well, pretty awesome

Earlier this month we reported that Ubisoft was going to make a short live-action movie based on Ghost Recon Future Soldier, their upcoming and latest game in their military shooter series. Now we have gotten a glimpse of what that movie will look like in this brief trailer.

You can watch the trailer for yourself but it already looks and sounds awesome. It takes place in a near future version of Moscow as our team take out some ultra-nationalist dictator who has taken control of the country. Look for some cool tech in this clip including that Predator-like camouflage being used by the strike team.

Newly awarded Oscar winners to make short Ghost Recon film for Ubisoft

Last year, Ubisoft released a series of short live action films that tied into Assassin's Creed 2. Now the publisher wants to do the same thing with their upcoming military shooter Ghost Recon: Future Solider and they have recruited the people behind a movie that just won an Academy Award.

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog reports that the movie will be directed by Francois Alaux and Herve de Crecy. Their previous movie was Logorama, which won the Oscar last Sunday for Best Animated Short Film. Ubisoft will spend between $8 million and $10 million to make the 20 minute Ghost Recon short film which will act as a prequel to Future Soldier. The short will be written by Tim Sexton who previously worked on the movie Children of Men.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier announced; confirmed for PC [Update]

We had a feeling about this last week and for once we were right. Ubisoft has officially announced what they have been teasing us about for a year. A new Ghost Recon shooter game is in the works. Officially titled Ghost Recon Future Soldier, the game is due for release before the end of 2010. Ubisoft trademarked the title late last year.

Developed by Ubisoft's Paris studio, the publisher is keeping most details of the game to itself. It does state that the game will feature "prototype high-tech weaponry" and high end tech along with both single and multiplayer modes. There's no official word yet if the game will be released for the PC although almost all of the previous Ghost Recon games have been released for the PC platform.

Update: A "tweet" on the Twitter page of Ubisoft's community manager Kimi Matsuzaki states, "For those wondering: We will tell more about the PC version later." A later "tweet" seems to indicate the PC port will be released sometime after the console versions.
