Rumor: Gears of War 2 coming to PC after all?

Several months ago, Epic Games designer Cliff Bleszinski seemed to close the door on a PC port of their Xbox 360 shooter Gears of War 2, saying flat out, " We've decided we're not going to do a PC version this time around." Now IGN is reporting that may not be true after all.

Their evidence? A consumer web site that we have never heard of before is taking pre-orders on a PC version of Gears of War 2, complete with box art for the game and a release date of December 4, 2009. Naturally, the game publisher Microsoft still says that there is that there is no such PC version of the game planned but we will of course post up word if that position changes.

Gears of War PC runs out of time..sort of

How much support is Microsoft putting into the 2007 release of the PC port of Gears of War? How about the fact that they apparently allowed their Verisign certification for the shooter to expire? Folks over at the Epic Games message boards have been complaining they can't run the game anymore because of this error (although it looks like turning your PC's system clock back to before Jan. 29 is a solid workaround).

Epic Games is apparently on the case with a forum moderator stating, "We have been notified of the issue and are working with Microsoft to get it resolved." Guess we should be glad we aren't getting a Gears of War 2 port after all.

Feature: 2008 console games that should be PC games

2008 was a great year for PC gamers but it might have been a better year if some of the best console games of last year had also been ported over to the PC. We know, we know...some console ports are better than others but still there's a lot of potential in having many of 2008's best games come to our side of the fence.

2009 will see console titles like Mirror's Edge, Saints Row 2 and Burnout Paradise come to the PC but what if other such game also made the jump. Big Download has our picks for console exclusives that should be considered for the PC such as Gears of War 2 and many others.

Don't expect a Gears of War 2 PC port

When Epic Games decided to do a PC port of their 2006 Xbox 360 mega seller Gears of War they decided to go all out with support for DirectX10, Games for Windows Live support, an all new single player mission and new multiplayer maps and modes that the Xbox 360 owners would never get access to. However, the game's release in 2007 was a bit of a bust with sales on the low side.

So it's no shock that Epic designer Cliff Bleszinsk has been quoted by IGN in a new Q&A as saying, "Gears of War is a great franchise first and foremost for Xbox 360, and therefore we're focusing on that platform for Gears of War 2. We've decided we're not going to do a PC version this time around." Epic is not abandoning the PC platform; they are working on a PC game for Electronic Arts with their partners at People Can Fly

More gaming panels at San Diego Comic-Con revealed

Earlier this week we reported on the first gaming panel programming that was announced for the first day (Thursday) for the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con on July 25-28. Now the convention's web site has revealed the panel programming for the rest of the show and Friday and Saturday seem to be packed with game and game related events (Sunday seems to be free of gaming related panels).

On Friday convention attendees can go to panels about Midway's fighting game Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe, the upcoming MMOs Stargate Worlds and DC Universe Online, and the upcoming Ghostbusters game (with actors Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson scheduled to attend). There will also be a World of Warcraft panel and the big Star Wars panel will have segments on the upcoming LucasArts Clone Wars and The Force Unleashed game titles. Capcom will hold a panel on how to break into the game industry and there will also be a Penny Arcade panel. There will also be a panel on the upcoming movie adaptation of Prince of Persia (with the game's original creator Jordan Mechner scheduled to attend) and a panel on the upcoming CGI movie Resident Evil: Degeneration.

On Saturday, Comic-Con will hosts a Telltale Games panel where the creators will announce plans for a third episodic game series to join their Sam and Max and Strong Bad series. A Warhammer Online panel will also be held and THQ will host a panel on Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II and Deadly Creatures. Cliff Bleszinski and Peter Molyneux will attend a panel to talk about Gears of War 2 and Fable 2, respectively. EA will host a Dead Space panel and Capcom will also host a Bionic Commando panel at the show.

If you haven't bought your tickets for Comic-Con yet, you are out of luck if you want the four-day pass or one-day passes for Friday and Saturday. Some tickets for Thursday and Sunday are still available for purchase.

Epic intends to make Unreal 3 someday

Eurogamer's Kristan Reed followed up on Epic Games' recent flurry of XBox 360 Unreal Tournament 3 announcements by speaking with VP Mark Rein yesterday. They covered a wide variety of Epic-related topics. Not the least of those: speculation about a third single-player title in the Unreal franchise.

"I'm sure that at some point in our future we will make another single-player, story-driven Unreal game," said Rein. "I'm sure at some point there will be one. There are no plans to do one today." So it's coming, but not any time soon! Other info from the interview: there are no specific plans to release the 360 exclusive content on the PC but "who knows," more downloadable content is on the way, Epic is working on new IPs, and Gears of War 2 is (of course) going to be awesome.

The rest of the interview covered subjects related exclusively to the Epic's console work.
