Garry's Mod continues to sell well with over 770,000 units

Earlier today we reported that Minecraft had now sold over 500,000 units, an astonishing level for an independent game available only via download. It's anyone's guess on how long that rate of sales will last but we suspect its creator Markus Perrson would love the longevity of another acclaimed sandbox-based game, Garry's Mod.

The $10 Source Engine-based mod (it still requires another retail Source Engine-based game to work) is the creation of UK-based Garry Newman. It launched as a commercial product on Steam in late November 2006. On its two year anniversary, Newman revealed Garry's Mod had sold 312,541 copies. Kotaku, in a new feature about Garry's Mod today, got Newman to state that the game has now sold 770,628 units in its lifetime which means the rate of sales has actually increased since two years ago.

Garry's Mod released for Mac; 50 percent sale for next week

It's been promised for a little while now but today folks with a Mac can finally play the acclaimed Source Engine-based sandbox game Garry's Mod. The Mac port is now available for purchase and download via Steam alongside its PC game counterpart. As with the PC version, Garry's Mod still requires that the user have another Source Engine-based game be installed before it can be used to do things like make the G-Man have a goofy smile.

The Mac launch is being celebrated with a week long sale. For now Garry's Mod can be yours for just $4.99, a 50 percent discount from its regular price. Again if you purchase either the PC or Mac versions you get the other port for free.

Garry's Mod coming to Mac

It's still one of the most popular games online on Steam. It's Garry's Mod and the sandbox game based on the Source Engine looks like it could be the next game to be ported to the Mac. An update on the game's official blog shows a build of Garry's Mod running on the Mac OS.

The development seems to be running pretty quickly with the game's creator Garry Newman stating in one blog post, "Let me just say how impressed I am with how easy the Source engine has made this process." And when will Mac players get to try out the vast potiential of Garry's Mod? Newman states, " No ETA as of yet, but it isn't going to be ages away."
