More info on Star Trek free-to-play browser game announced

Last June at E3 Gameforge announced plans to release a free-to-play browser game based on the Star Trek license. Today the company announced the actual title of the game, Star Trek: Infinite Space. It also announced that Keen Games will be handling the development duties for the title.

While gameplay details are still pretty vague, it was announced today that Star Trek: Infinite Space would be set during the timeline of the TV series Star Trek Deep Space Nine. That may mean that the game will center on that show's Dominion War story arc that was at the heart of the shows final few seasons. The game is due to launch in the summer of 2011.

Free browser-based Star Trek games to get some experienced help

Last June Gameforge announced that the game publisher had gotten the rights to make Facebook-based and browser-based games based on the Star Trek franchise. This week Gameforge revealed that the company has recruited the husband/wife team of Denise and Michael Okuda to be consultants on the games.

Michael Okuda has worked on various Star Trek projects over the years as a graphics designer for four of the five Trek TV shows and many of the movies. He and his wife Denise also co-authored The Star Trek Encyclopedia many years ago. For the Gameforge games the duo will be "providing their expertise regarding visual elements and technical data." The browser and Facebook Star Trek games are expected to launch sometime in 2011.

More about free browser-based Star Trek games revealed

Earlier this week we reported that Germany-based Gameforge had secured the rights to make free browser-based games based on the Star Trek license. Little else was revealed about the games but now we have more info from fan site Trekmovie.com as they chatted with executive producer Ralf Adam. He stated that the first two games will be released in 2011. One of the games will be set in the timeline of the original TV series while the other will be set in the Next Generation-Deep Space Nine timeline

One of the games will be all about space combat and exploration (you can see a concept art piece above this post) and the other will be a "social network game" that will be lighter in tone. Both games are still in pre-production.
