Headup Games' titles coming to US retail stores

German-based game developer Headup Games is perhaps best known to US audiences for its sci-fi turn based strategy game Future Wars. Now Headup Games will soon be released via retail stores in a new agreement with new US game publisher Collective Mindz.

According to the email press release, the agreement includes Headup Games' previously released product, including Future Wars, along with its upcoming zombie-themed tactical strategy game Trapped Dead that's due out in early 2011. Headup Games previously announced an digital download publishing agreement with Meridian4. Big Download contacted Merdidian4 and a spokesperson stated that the agreement with Headup Games is still active, saying, "We feel that the additional exposure the games will receive by going into retail will help everyone involved and will get these great games in front of a larger gaming audience."

Review: Future Wars

If you've played any of the games from the Advance Wars series on the Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS, then you already have an idea of how Future Wars plays. This PC turn based strategy game lets players build and manage a variety of units to spread out across the map while factoring in terrain bonuses for each move. Future Wars also features very nice looking, brightly colored, animated 3D graphics and is relatively easy to learn. However, the game's general lack of features can make for a very unsatisfying experience.

Future Wars released exclusively on Impulse

Earlier this year we reported that publisher Meridian4 had secured a publishing deal with developer Headup Games to released their titles over the next few years. This week the first game under that agreement, Future Wars, has been released. It's now available exclusively via Stardock's Impulse PC game download service.

The sci-fi turn based strategy game in the vein of titles like Advance Wars also includes support for mods including an easy-to-use level editor. The Impulse service is offering five additional levels for the game for free. It's also giving folks a 20 percent discount from Future Wars' regular price until April 13.

Meridian4 to publish Future Wars and other future Headup Games titles

Last year, publisher Meridian4 released two games from developer Headup Games, Greed and Gear Grinder. Today the publisher announced they have reached a new deal with Headup Games that will make Meridian4 their exclusive digital download publisher for the next three years.

The first game under their new agreement is Future Wars, a sci-fi turn-based strategy game in the vein of the console title Advance Wars. The game will have a "rock-paper-scissors" style of gameplay but with a full 3D graphics engine. Future Wars will also have support for mods including an easy-to-use editor. There's no word yet on when Future Wars will be released.
