Codemasters looking for new money?

UK-based publisher Codemasters has not been immune to the current economic situation and today reports are that the company is close to securing some more money after 2009 left it short of cash, according to a new report at the UK based Time Online web site.

The story claims that in addition to new funds from existing investors Balderton Capital and Goldman Sachs Codemasters will gain money from an unnamed new investor source. However the publisher's current release schedule is lacking in upcoming games. After releasing several titles in 2009, including Damnation, Fuel, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and Dirt 2 the company currently has just one upcoming game that's officially announced; the long-delayed MMO Jumpgate Evolution.

Review: FUEL

FUEL takes place in an alternate reality where global warming has taken its toll on the environment and civilization is devastated by powerful, erratic weather patterns. Of course, where there's catastrophe, others see opportunity. In this case, racers decided to take advantage of the abandoned real estate for their own entertainment. They form a fringe society that is determined to burn up the last remaining fuel supplies for extreme all-terrain racing. Covering 14,000 km^2 (over 5,000 square miles) of the American Northwest mapped using real-life satellite footage, FUEL is perhaps the biggest racing game to date. Areas include landmarks like Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon, remade into crazy race courses where players can drive everything from motorbikes, to ATV's, to monster trucks. However, despite its enormity and wide variety of terrain that spans from desert to snowy mountain tops, it soon becomes apparent that size isn't everything.

This Week In PC Games: June 29-July 5

A Wild West shooter and a open world driving game are the highlights in the new PC game released this week:

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood: Developer Techland and publisher Ubisoft team up again on this sequel to the 2007 Western shooter. Play as one of two of the McCall brothers as they try to find the lost gold of Juarez while engaging in some six shooter firefights.

Video explains how Fuel handles the open world

The Codemasters team working on Fuel knew that it would have its hands full in developing the open world racing game. New technology had to be built from the ground up, but it was worth all the time and effort, since Fuel will feature 5,560 square miles for racers to cover, in addition to huge unpredictable weather effects, making it the largest racing game developed for consoles to date. In Fuel, players race along an ecologically devastated area of the midwest, which has some extreme weather conditions. The game is scheduled to release on console systems and the PC on June 5th.
