PC gamers quickly stood up in anger when Microsoft announced that Portal would see an exclusive expansion-esque release on the Xbox Live Marketplace with the upcoming Portal: Still Alive arcade game. That anger subsided when we found out what was in the Arcade title. As we recently reported, Valve's Doug Lombardi confirmed that the Xbox Live Arcade release of Portal: Still Alive would be comprised of the maps found in the Portal: Flash Version Map Pack which has been on the PC since May. ArchLord, Codemasters' free MMORPG, still seems to be going strong. Codemasters announced today the addition of a new free expansion (much like the Issues in City of Heroes or the 2.x patches in World of Warcraft) which increases the game world significantly. The expansion, along with the extra zone content additions, will also include a rebalancing as well as many new skills and items. The expansion isn't live yet, but Ed Relf of Codemasters says that it's "coming soon". It may have been reviewed poorly, but this free MMORPG still has some life left in her!

The Sudden Strike series of games, while definitely not appealing to the mass-market, are decent entries in the real-time tactics genre. The World War 2 setting and limited reinforcements only ratchet up the tension that much more. The third one, while not exactly the most well-received game, is still a decent entry in the franchise worth playing for any fan. The developer, Fireglow Games, recently announced the opening of the beta test for their new free add-on. The add-on includes several new maps and missions for players to delve into. If that's your thing, you can get the installer off of the official developer website.

Deus Ex, an esteemed classic of the first-person-shooter genre, will join Psychonauts and Thief: Deadly Shadows on GameTap's list of free-to-play games next week. Even though it uses the original Unreal engine, Deus Ex has aged surprisingly well. It stands next to System Shock 2 as one of the deepest and most praised shooters in PC gaming.

GameTap offers a vast library of old to semi-recent games, which can be downloaded and played by members. Most of those games are only available to paid subscribers, but every once in a while a good one is made free for a while to promote the service. It used to offer gaming news and other editorial content, but that division was just shut down.

This week, new games available to subscribers include Ducati World Championship, Tortugo Pirates of the New World, and Brian Lara Cricket 2007. Ah, well; they can't be awesome every week.
