FPS Trainer aims to train gamers to play first person shooters

Do you play first person shooter games like the Call of Duty titles and say to yourself, "Self, I'm so good I could go pro"? Or do you just want to beat your cousin online in Topeka in online matches? Now an upcoming browser based game is aiming to train players to compete and win in FPS games.

The game is FPS Trainer and according to the site the game will not only give players a chance to hone their skills in matches but will also give coaching tips to those players and offer states to show players their strengths and weaknesses. It's an interesting idea but we do wonder what the ultimate price for these "coaching" sessions truly is. There's no word on when the game will officially launch.

Xbox 360's Kinect head claims "hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC anymore"

When a console exec claims something is true on the PC platform, it should be taken with a grain of salt. That's exactly what happened in a recent interview with Kudo Tsunoda, the head of Microsoft's upcoming Kinect motion sensing camera program. In the interview, Tsunoda used first person shooters to help explain a point that games that use the Kinect tech should not be ported but made specifically for the camera.

He states, "If you think about the way that first person shooters evolved, they started on the PC. People for the longest time tried to port shooters from the PC onto the console." He added, "Halo did an awesome job of building a first-person shooter exclusively for the console, and now hardly anyone plays first person shooters on the PC anymore. It's all about the console." We wonder how the tens of thousands of players that sign on at one time to play Modern Warfare 2, Counter-Strike or Counter-Strike Source on Steam feel about that statement.

Jace Hall Show shows off unannounced Warner Bros. Interactive game

The third season of the web series The Jace Hall Show has posted up its sixth and (for now) final epiosde (it's just going on hiatus) but the IGN-sponsored web site managed to get a first look at an unannounced and unnamed game from publisher Warner Bros. Interactive (where Jace Hall used to be president of).

After some humorous banter about how Hall almost brought down Warner Bros Interactive while he ran the division (at least we think it's supposed to be humorous) the publisher execs give in and let Hall film five seconds of an unnamed future game. As you can see from the above image it appears to be a first person shooter title but that's all we can gather from the footage. You can check out the entire episode, which features a throw down with Randy Jackson, a 11 year old Jace Hall and a surprise ending, after the jump:

Feature: 2010 PC Game Preview - Action-FPS Games Part 2

Yesterday we started our multi-part 2010 PC game preview with the first part of our two part action-first person shooter overview. Today we conclude our look at that genre with a number of games that we think might actually be released this year, including one or two that have yet to be officially announced (but we know they are being made).

Once again, release dates can and usually do change so if some of these titles don't make a 2010 release, please don't blame us. We are just the messenger.

Machinima clip turns FPS characters into reality TV contestants

Reality TV shows seem like they keep falling from a mythical reality TV show tree nowadays. One show we actually wish was real was created by a machinima team that put their efforts on YouTube. Top FPS puts a number of well know first person shooter characters together to see who is the best.

Yes, both we and the machinima makers know that Gears of War guy isn't really from a first person shooter (he apparently lied on his application). And how much does Barney from Half-Life 2 (acting as the host of Top FPS) look like Survivor's Jeff Propst? Anyway, mad props to these guys for their efforts. It makes us forget all about The Pick-Up Artist.

Video shows life with "Duke Nukem's Disease"

Oh dear. We admit that sometimes when we really get into playing a first person shooter the immersion of the gameplay experience can take us out of reality for a bit. However we quickly snap back when something intrudes such as a cat who wants to walk on your keyboard all of a sudden or a wife who wants you to clean up the bathroom or something else that's mundane.

But be glad you don't have this guy's condition in the above YouTube video. Sure it's supposed to be for laughs and giggles. However haven't you worried about having something like this happen to you? Hey, at least this fictional character will get some employment for his disease.

What makes a good first person shooter?

You are a hard core first person shooter gamer. You enjoy taking that mouse and keyboard and inflicting all sorts of property and human destruction on the screen. But just what makes a good FPS game experience. A new article over at Gamasutra (reprinted from a recent Game Developer print magazine issue).has the results of a study by a group called EmSense who used EEG and bio-feedback to monitor the response of gamers who played a number of FPS titles, including Battlefield 2142, Half-Life 2, and F.E.A.R.

According to the study, FPS gamers prefer their tutorials be intergrated into the game and don't care for more overt tutorials like a boot camp scene. Gamers like FPS titles that vary well between intense battle scenes with times to recover and reflect. They don't care for repetition or battle sequences that may overshadow what happens later in a level. FPS fans like close combat in their titles but don't like weapons beyond the normal ones that could be too powerful and as a result don't give the gamer much of a challenge. The article should be very interesting reading for both gamers and FPS game developers.

Project Origin Trailer dials up the intensity

The latest blood-soaked trailer for Project Origin runs through a patchwork of cinematic and action sequences. Not much new is revealed, but the trailer, which features up-close flashes of monsters and bodies exploding from heavy gunfire, should be watched in the dark.

Far Cry 2 hits Dreamhack in latest video

Far Cry 2 recently made a long trip to Jönköping, Sweden to make an appearance at Dreamhack, the world's largest LAN party in computer games festival. The video documents more about Dreamhack and its caffeinated, sleep deprived, camped-out gamers than the game itself, but it's still fun to watch.

E3 08: Left 4 Dead videos reveal new player characters

Valve Software's Gabe Newell took the stage at EA's E3 press conference to present the cooperative horror game Left 4 Dead. We have the video of that presentation on the other side of the jump, but here are the Cliff's Notes.

All four current player character models will be replaced with the above-pictured folks. This was probably a good change; the old ones weren't very likable or varied. In addition to that bit of info, Newell talked about the game's AI director, which will adjust the gameplay to match players' playstyles, positions, and status.

He also said the game is coming out on November 4th, but that news ain't new. Anyway, the game seems to be coming along swimmingly. Be sure and check out the video after the break!
