Square Enix records lower profits in latest financial report

Publisher Square Enix announced its latest financial numbers for the company's nine month period that ended on December 31, 2010. Revenues came in at 98.1 billion yen for the period which was down 28 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Profits came in at 1.8 billion yen, a whopping 77 percent reduction from the same period a year ago.

The bug-filled launch of the fantasy MMO Final Fantasy XIV was perhaps a big reason for the shortfall as Square Enix has delayed taking monthly subscriptions for the game indefinitely until the development team can fix and improve the game. In 2011, Square Enix plans to release at least two PC games; the action-RPG Dungeon Siege III and the long awaited Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Feature: Top 10 2010 console games that should also be PC games

There's lots of PC games that are due in 2010 but let's face facts; there are also some games due in the next 12 months that are (at the moment anyway) supposed to be console exclusive. We think that at least some of those titles should be made available to PC owners as well.

Big Download picked 10 games that are planned for a console-only release in 2010 that we think should be released for the PC platform. They include action-adventure titles, a co-op specific title, a long awaited fantasy RPG and a 256-player first person shooter. We also give our opinion on if in fact a PC port is possible, unlikely or never going to happen for each game.

Could Final Fantasy XIII appear on the PC?

One of the few Games for Windows announcements at Microsoft's E3 press release was that Square Enix had plans to port The Last Remnant to the PC platform sometime after its console release. But could the big kahuna of the Square Enix line-up, Final Fantasy XIII, also show up on your PC hard drive?

NVIDIA's NZone gaming site has an article which claims Square Enix in fact announced the long awaited RPG for the PC at E3 (in fact it didn't). However the article does state that Square Enix is using PC development tools to make Final Fantasy XIII along with Final Fantasy XIIII Versus and an unannounced MMO project. So it's entirely possible that the game could show up on the PC as well as on consoles. Square Enix previously released Final Fantasy VII and the MMO Final Fantasy XI on the PC.

Update: Looks like the speculation can stop for now as Videogaming247 claims to have heard from a Square Enix rep that the game won't be coming to the PC. Hmmmm
