Freeware Friday: Toribash

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

There's a wide range of fighting games, from Street Fighter to Soul Calibur. Some, like Guilty Gear, focus on learning every in and out of a character and utilizing all the strengths in a fast-paced battle of wills. Others, like Tekken, are slower and more deliberate, with countless strategies for approaching any scenario. None of them, however, let the player truly decide the moves. They are pre-generated by the designers, focusing the creativity of the players into a very specific channel. Toribash is the answer to these games. A fighter where you design and perform all your own moves in gloriously smooth animation, Toribash is one of the best fighters ever, commercial or free.

Bootfighter Windom XP SP-2, the mecha OS game

There's an of internet phenomenon called the OS-tan. It's a sort of anthropomorphic personification (hello Terry Pratchett!) of operating systems as people. Bootfighter Windom XP SP-2 is a sort of off-shoot of this movement. Only instead of cute girls, the operating systems are deadly mechs. Bootfighter is a fairly easy to grasp mecha brawler, especially if you play a lot of PC games. The controls are effective, the graphics crisp, and the sound clean. The game itself is loads of fun, bringing to mind memories of Zone of the Enders and the battles therein. As it's freeware, it never hurts to try it out if you are curious.
