World Cyber Games select new PC titles for 2009 season

One of the few remaining pro gaming tournament organizations with tournaments in the US is the World Cyber Games. Recently the organization announced which games will be the official tournament titles that will be used in the WCG championships.

Some of the games have been used before like Counter-Strike 1.6, Starcraft: Brood War, and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The WCG will also use the PC version of FIFA 09, Carom3D (a billiards title) and the MMO game Red Stone. In an unusual move, the WCG have also added the racing game Trackmania Nations Forever as a new official title in tournaments. Regional and national tournaments will be held throughout the year all over the world. The WCG World Championships will be held in Chengdu, China on Nov. 11-15

EA pulls out of launching new Vancouver dev studio

Electronic Arts has been feeling the economic pinch this year as profits are down for the large game publisher. Now our sister site GameDaily is reporting that a planned new EA development studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is now on hold, most likely because of its current financial troubles.

EA already has two dev studios in the Vancouver area; one developed the FIFA soccer games (one of the few EA Sports titles still being made for the PC) while the other, EA Black Box, is home to the Need for Speed series. The new studio was planned to be a 20,000 square foot facility but the office space that was going to be used has now been given to another tenant.

Big Iron: Console vs PC

You smell that? I love the smell of Napalm in the morning. It smells like.... victory.
- Lieutenant Colonel Willard, Apocalypse Now

This is sure to be the first of an ongoing series of incendiary grenades on the subject, stoked, in this case, by some remarks made on the EA Sports forums regarding FIFA 09.

On the one hand, we have folks complaining about two different versions of the game being delivered -- one for the PC, and one for the console market. When, at first blush, BI was made aware of the impending brouhaha, the gloves came off, the eyes turned red, and a whole lot of words that won't be appearing in this space for fear of earning an M rating came pouring in a napalm-flavored from torrent our keyboard.

The sanitized version goes something like this....

"Powered by the third generation of the EA SPORTS football engine, FIFA 09 features more than 250 core gameplay additions and enhancements that deliver the most responsive, intelligent and realistic action ever for the series. Enjoy turning defenders with more controlled dribbling and ball control, snapping off precision shots with improved first-time shooting mechanics and firing beautifully timed passes with greater accuracy, placing the ball exactly where you want it. With new player momentum physics the speed and weight of the player determines everything from the distance of a slide tackle and the power of a header to the severity of player collisions and the height of a player's jump. Plus, players now behave according to their physical attributes with larger, stronger players dominating collisions, battles for control of the ball, and position in challenges for two player headers."
