Feist trailer shows off cool looking platformer gameplay

The rise of Indie games are part of the reason why the PC game industry isn't a tiny niche business. Indie games can come out and surprise with not only innovative gameplay but a hook that makes the game actually sell well. A new developer called Filthy Grip has been working for some time on a cool looking platformer called Feist and they recently released a new trailer after several months of silence.

As you can see the game has a unique art style with super-dark characters and environments in the foreground. There seems to be a lot of physics interaction and some interesting gameplay mechanics along with a nice sense of humor. Feist is being developed for both the PC and Mac but no release date has been announced.

IGF Finalist Showcase: Visual Art Excellence

With the IGF finalists announced, game makers only have a short while longer to find out the best of the best in indie games from last year. From the best overall game to the one with the most impressive art, there's several different categories for indie game designers to aspire to be the top of. This week we're going to take a look at a few of the games that have made it to the finals.

While a lot of players say they want new gameplay, innovative design, or awesome technical prowess, this isn't the majority. No the majority of players want clean, crisp, and altogether nice graphics in their game. If the graphics don't fit, then players assume the rest of the game doesn't fit either. From audio to gameplay to narrative is included in this. Players are a fickle lot, and they want eye candy. So here's the five best entries in the visual arts (AKA graphics) category of the IGF competition.

Indie Showcase: Nov 11th

Welcome to the Indie Showcase, a semi-regular column on Big Download that takes a look at games we haven't covered on the site that we really think you should play.

There's a wide array of platforms to launch your awesome web games, from a simple Java applet to the animation-based Flash. There's a new contender on the scene with Unity, though, and the output by some truly creative people has managed to push it forward as a great platform for independent developers. This is the platform that Flashbang Studios is using for their games such as Jetpack Brontosaurus, Off-Road Velociraptor Safari, and Minotaur China Shop, and their support behind it and role in teaching new developers about it has brought Unity forward more and more as a good platform for web developers.

The developers behind the Unity platform recently hosted a competition for games made using the Unity platform. Among the list of participants are familiar faces such as the aforementioned efforts from Flashbang Studios, but there were some other efforts there that really amazed. Some were web-based, others were downloadable, but they were all incredible games that caught the eye and intrigued the brain. Here's some of the best that can be found, and the list of games in the competition can be found on the official Unity forums.
