Future Fallout 3 expansions may not have new level caps

Fallout 3 has had four mini-expansions available for download (the fifth, Mothership Zeta is due on August 3) but so far only one of them, Broken Steel, has raised the level cap for the hit RPG. The expansion raised the cap to 30 but can developer Bethesda Softworks raise it even more?

MTV Multiplayer put that question to Bethesda's Jeff Gardiner and he states, "I know from the outside this seems like a fairly simple proposition, but doing this could unbalance the game in a variety of ways." While he hints later on that they could change their minds at some point we don't expect this to happen anytime in the near future.

Fallout 3: Broken Steel reappears for PC Games For Windows Live users

Last Tuesday we thought we were going to enjoy playing Broken Steel, the third and final (for now away) downloadable mini-expansion for Fallout 3. However install errors that were apparently on the Games For Windows Live client side of things caused problems for PC users and the decision was made to pull the download for Broken Steel.

Now it looks like everything is back to normal as the Broken Steel download is once again available for Games For Windows Live members to download and add to Bethesda Softworks' hit RPG game. As we have mentioned before the expansion continues from the ending of Fallout 3 and raises your character's level cap from 20 to 30. It still costs 800 Microsoft points (about $10) to purchase.

Problems for PC Fallout 3: Broken Steel release

In March, Xbox 360 owners had issues with installing the second Fallout 3 mini-expansion The Pitt. Now it's apparently our turn. The launch of the third DLC expansion for Bethesda Softworks' post-apocalypse RPG, titled Broken Steel, is not turning out well for PC owners of the game.

According to reports on Bethesda's message boards, attempts to install the expansion via Microsoft's Games For Windows Live client have come up with a different file size than the one you are supposed to download. Error messages also show up when attempting to install the expansion. We've contacted Bethesda Softworks about this issue and their PR rep stated, "We're checking with Microsoft to see what's going on. We'll let you know."

Fallout 3: Broken Steel trailer provides alternate ending

This trailer for the third DLC expansion for Fallout 3, Broken Steel, provides some glimpses on what players can expect. Some of the features players are looking forward to include an extension to the linear story ending so that it doesn't bring the game to a close. To compliment the extended story, Broken Steel will also have a new level cap complete with additional Perks. Broken Steel will available on the PC and Xbox 360 tomorrow.

This week in PC Games: May 4-10

While there's not much going on in retail stores for new PC games this week (the Crysis: Maximum Edition collection is the big release there) there are a few downloadable only games that are of note for the first full week of May.

Fallout 3: Broken Steel: The third and final (so far) downloadable mini-expansion for Bethesda Softworks' best selling RPG is due out on May 5. This episode is different in that it extends the game's original ending and raise the game's level cap from 20 to 30. Look for new quests, weapons and monsters in this expansion which you can download via the Games For Windows Live client for 800 Microsoft points (about $10).

Rumor: New Fallout 3 DLC revealed?

There have been hints that Bethesda Softworks have more plans for Fallout 3 downloadable content beyond the release next week of the third such mini-expansion, Broken Steel. The Fallout fan site No Mutants Allowed may have picked up signs that at least one more such expansion is in the works.

The site has spotted two listings on separate retail web sites that show a retail release of Broken Steel combined with something called Point Look. Naturally Bethesda's official stance is that beyond Broken Steel they have not announced any additional DLC. Of course the whole "announced" designation gives them an out if in fact they do have plans for further DLC products. At the moment put this in the rumor column.

New info and screenshots from Fallout 3: Broken Steel released

As we get closer to the release of Broken Steel, the third and final (for now) downloadable expansion for Fallout 3, Bethesda Softworks is revealing more about the expansion itself. The official web site for the best selling post-apocalypse RPG has posted up three new screenshots from Broken Steel which we have added to our gallery.

In addition the official Fallout 3 site has a new dev diary written by two of the expansion's designers, Jeff Browne and Alan Nanes. They talk about the challenges of creating the first real continuation of Fallout 3's storyline beyond it's original ending, adding new quests, monsters and weapons to the mix. Fallout 3: Broken Steel is still set for release on May 5 via Games For Windows Live.

Fallout 3: Broken Steel details; to be released on May 5

It's been a long wait for Fallout 3 fans, but in just a couple of weeks they will be getting the downloadable expansion that they have been longing for. Bethesda Softworks has officially announced that Fallout 3: Broken Steel will be released via digital download on May 5. The expansion will be made available via the Games For Windows Live client and like the first two DLC expansions will cost 800 Microsoft points (about $10).

Our sister site Joystiq has more details on Broken Steel which as promised continues the game's storyline beyond its original ending. It also raises the level cap in the game from 20 to 30 and adds new weapons, items and perks to the game. You will be back in Washington DC again for this new adventure which should run between 4 and 5 hours in terms of game time. This is the last of the announced Fallout 3 downloadable expansions but Bethesda team members have already hinted they have other DLC plans in the works.
