Sony Online faces lawsuit from visually impaired gamer

PC games should be able to be played by everyone, even those who can't see what's happening on the screen. That's the premise behind a new lawsuit that was filed in October by Alexander Stern, a visually impaired person, against Sony Online Entertainment.

According to the story from GameSpot, Stern claims that Sony Online's titles (no specific game is mentioned) do not do enough to make their games accessible to people like himself. Stern believes that violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. The lawsuit says that various phone calls and emails requesting such features be added have been ignored. Sony Online has not commented publicly on the lawsuit.

Lots of MMO games hold Halloween themed live events

One of the cool things about massively multiplayer games is the ability to generate live events and nowhere is that more evident than during Halloween where a number of MMO games stage live events filled with monsters and otherwise supernatural events. We've already reported on Champion Online's Blood Moon event and Star Wars Galaxies' Death Troopers but our sister site Massively has been keeping track of other MMOs holding similar events.

  • Fallen Earth is letting its players fight off zombies in their Days of the Dead event which you can see above this post. That event begins next week.
  • Everquest II players is holding its Nights of the Dead event from now until November 9 with decorations, special item drops and more.
  • Warhammer Online players get serious with their Daemon Moon Rising event that begins on October 23. Look for a new public quest called Daemonball Rally among other things.
  • City of Heroes players have their own unnamed Halloween event beginning on October 20. Heroes will face a wave of enemies when they destroy a Haunted Sigil and are rewarded with a "ghoulish surprise" if successful.

Movie Review: Second Skin

The documentary film Second Skin, Directed by Juan Carlos Pineiro Escoriaza, examines the different aspects of the MMORPG's (Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Games) phenomenal popularity, the culture that has grown around them and speaks to experts and developers about them. While the documentary has a tendency to fly in different directions in its attempt to cover every facet of gaming, it mainly focuses on three distinct stories. The first centers on a group of friends in Fort Wayne, Indiana who are dedicated World of Warcraft players; the second includes a budding romance between two EverQuest 2 players; and the last involves a man who hits rock bottom with his MMO addiction.

Firsr revealed last January, Sony Online has now announced that their long awaited hardcover book chronicling the first 10 years of their flagship MMO EverQuest is now available for purchase. EverQuest: The 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition book, published by Brady Games, is priced at $34.99, a much cheaper price point that what was first announced ($49.99).

The book tells the story of the creation of one of the first MMOs on the market (and the first ever to use 3D graphics) which launched in 1999 as well as the making of its sequel EverQuest II (released in 2004). Interviews and commentary from the game's development team are featured as well as concept artwork, promotional images and more.

New Everquest and Everquest II expansions announced

Sony Online Entertainment is holding its annual Fan Faire event in Las Vegas this weekend and during the event the publisher revealed the next commercial expansion packs for both of their Everquest PC MMO games. The original Everquest title gets its 16th commercial expansion with Everquest: Underfoot. It will have the usual additions (new locations, monsters and more) when it's released in November.

The new expansion for Everquest II was also revealed during the event. Titled Everquest II: Sentinel's Fate, this expansion is not due for release until February 2010 but will raise the game's current level cap to 90. You can check out some concept art for the expansion at the game's official web site.

EverQuest gets its groove on for 10th anniversary

Sony Online Entertainment celebrated ten years of EverQuest yesterday. The event was such a big deal that the mayor of San Diego, CA (where SOE is based) officially declared March 16 as Sony Online Entertainment Day. This video takes viewers through the long history of the game, its sequel and their expansions. You'd think the avatars would pick up a few extra dance moves after a decade. Fans of the game can also look forward to the annual Fan Faire to be held June 25 - 28 at Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas. Tickets will begin to be sold in April.
