EVE Online gets over 60,000 players at one time

For a game that's over seven years old EVE Online is still growing its user base. The space-based MMO reached another milestone on Sunday as the game's developer CCP Games announced that EVE Online had 60,453 players in the game at one time on EVE Online's one server.

It's the first time that the game has had over 60,000 people playing online at one time and blows away the previous record set just last January of 56,021 players. Part of the reason behind the new record amount is the recent launch of the game's latest free expansion, Tyrannis.

EVE Online Tyrannis expansion delayed one week to May 26

Next week will see one less game (or in this case game expansion) released. CCP Games just sent over word that Tyrannis, the latest free expansion to their hit space-based MMO EVE Online, won't be out on May 18 as scheduled. Instead it's been pushed back one week to May 26.

In addition the game's market seeding of Planetary Command Centers has been pushed back even further and will now be available on June 8. In a development blog, the game's official web site states that the expansion's biggest new feature, where players will be able to interact and mine directly from planets, had some "scalability issues". The issues "led to code refactoring that then needed further testing." Finally the EVE Gate social networking set-up has also had its launch pushed back to May 26.

EVE Online: Tyrannis expansion announced

Almost like clockwork, the developers at CCP Games cook up a new free expansion for their long running space-based MMO EVE Online every six to eight months or so. Today the developer officially announced their plans for their next expansion pack, EVE Online Tyrannis. Due out sometime this summer the expansion will finally allow players to mine minerals from the game's planets

Yes, that means planets in the game are no longer just eye candy. You will soon be able to set up structures to mine items from any planet in the EVE Online universe (yep, even gas giants). There's no planetary combat planned for the expansion; that's apparently being saved for the upcoming console shooter Dust 514 which will link up with EVE Online at some point.
