Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - March 26-27

So a portable game console with glasses-free 3D was released today. Which is great, except that the console looks on the surface something that was made 10 or 15 years ago. Why won't Nintendo learn something new about case design?

Eurogamer Expo expanding games and exhibitor line-up

The just completed E For All Expo may have had only a handful of game publishers and upcoming game titles to exhibit but the first annual Eurogamer Expo will have a lot more to offer for gamers across the pond. Today the expo (sponsored by the well known gaming web site) announced new additions to its show, to be held in London on Oct. 28-29.

Upcoming games to be shown at the show include Valve's Left 4 Dead, EA's Mirror's Edge, Ubisoft's Prince of Persia, Activision's Call of Duty: World at War and others. At least 13 major game publishers will be showing off current and upcoming titles at the expo which is part of London's annual Games Festival.

Eurogamer to host its own expo in October

The Penny Arcade Expo has just finished up and the E For All Expo is coming in early October but across the pond the folks at the Eurogamer web site are hosting their own consumer game show on Oct 28-29 in London. The first annual Eurogamer Expo will be part of London's annual Games Festival.

If you happen to be in town for those two days the first annual Eurogamer Expo will have a number of upcoming fall titles like Prince of Persia, Far Cry 2, Mirror's Edge and many more. The best thing is the admission price. No, it's not free but they are asking for a mere GBP 5 donation to UK videogames charity GamesAid. That's a pretty good deal to see a bunch of upcoming fall 2008 titles.

HAWX to feature voice control, two-player co-op

Eurogamer managed to squeeze some Tom Clancy's HAWX-related information out of Ubidays demonstrator Andrei Costin: players will be able to give voice commands via microphone to AI wingmates, and the game will feature a two-player cooperative mode. The Ubisoft rep was not forthcoming with details, though.

The voice commands and cooperative mode match the theme of the game -- camaraderie with fellow pilots in extreme situations. According to Eurogamer, Ubisoft hopes to capture that Top Gun feel -- hopefully without the bad 80s music. We're still waiting on information on HAWX. So far all we have are tidbits like these and the Ubidays trailer. As Ubisoft reveals more info, though, we'll report what we see.

Epic intends to make Unreal 3 someday

Eurogamer's Kristan Reed followed up on Epic Games' recent flurry of XBox 360 Unreal Tournament 3 announcements by speaking with VP Mark Rein yesterday. They covered a wide variety of Epic-related topics. Not the least of those: speculation about a third single-player title in the Unreal franchise.

"I'm sure that at some point in our future we will make another single-player, story-driven Unreal game," said Rein. "I'm sure at some point there will be one. There are no plans to do one today." So it's coming, but not any time soon! Other info from the interview: there are no specific plans to release the 360 exclusive content on the PC but "who knows," more downloadable content is on the way, Epic is working on new IPs, and Gears of War 2 is (of course) going to be awesome.

The rest of the interview covered subjects related exclusively to the Epic's console work.

Peter Hines chats about Fallout 3, Zombies

Peter Hines decided to sit down with Eurogamer and give them a short interview on several topics related to Bethesda's upcoming Fallout 3 -- including a mention of why there'll be no demo. We can't say that we're not a little jealous of them, since before the interview they had just been demoed a piece of the game. Still, it's a good interview and easily worth a read.

From what we can gather, the guys over at Eurogamer tried their best to get even the slightest big of juicy information out of Peter, but he didn't budge. We were especially intrigued at the attempt to get him to talk about some kind of corpse eating statistic characters may have when Fallout 3 launches -- hopefully later this year.

This begs the question: Can players become zombies in Fallout 3, just as they could become Vampires in The Elder Scrolls series?

That would be, in a single word: awesome.

Portal 2 is a long ways off but better for it

If you've been hoping for a sequel to Portal to show up this year, it's time to be disappointed. Valve Software's Doug Lombardi told Eurogamer that we shouldn't expect a new Portal by Christmas. He said that since Portal was revolutionary, "its successor has to be equally revolutionary," and that means the team will be taking its time to make it a much better experience than a more-of-the-same offering.

A few things he said in the interview implied that Portal 2 might be a much bigger and more expensive game than its predecessor. "Half-Life 2 was the right decision," he said. "It was painful, six years and upwards of 40 million dollars to develop, but that paid off. That's our recipe." So what would a $40 million Portal look like? We won't find out this year!
