Team Fortress 2 Engineer update released; final maps and items revealed

Team Fortress 2 fans can now rejoice, The Engineer character class update for Valve's multiplayer shooter is now live via Steam for its owners. The Team Fortress 2 web site has also been updates with the final items that are a part of the update. One of them is the Gunslinger, which replaces the Engineer's wrench. It's basically a steel glove that increases health by 25 points and also gets a critical hit when a player gets three punches with it on an enemy.

The Gunslinger can also generate the other new item, the Combat Mini-Sentry. This smaller version of the main Sentry takes four times less time to build but deals half a normal Sentry's damage and cannot be repaired or upgraded. In addition another new Payload gameplay mode map, Thunder Mountain, has been added to the mix and a new community made Capture Point map, ColdFront, is included in the update.

So to sum up: The Engineer update adds three new Payload maps, one Capture Point map and four items for the Engineer class (the Frontier Justice Shotgun, the Wrangler, the Gunslinger and the Combat Mini-Sentry). All of that plus new achievements plus Engineers can now pick up and move Sentries around for the first time. All for the price of absolutely nothing. Nice.

More hints on Team Fortress 2 update content

Yes, the Team Fortress 2 web site officially revealed a new Payload map in its latest update on Wednesday night but as it turns out that's not the only thing Valve updated on the official site of its multiplayer shooter. If you move your cursor near the bottom of the Engineer Update main page you will find a link to this page that seems to show a Engineer's sentry that can be moved after it has been placed on the map. A portable sentry? Nice.

Oh and one more thing, as Steve Jobs might say at this point. The wrench at the bottom of the Engineer update page has changed. It's got spikes on it. This is likely the community item that Valve mentioned on the TF2 main page. We should get one more reveal later today just when the Team Fortress 2 update goes live on Steam.

Team Fortress 2 Engineer update reveals new Payload map

With just one more day to go before the Engineer player class update goes live for Team Fortress 2 players, the multiplayer shooter's official web site has revealed some more info about what Valve will include in the update. Today's reveal shows that the update will add another new map, Hightower, for the game's Payload gameplay mode.

The new map will join with the other new Payload level and two new Engineer items (the Frontier Justice shotgun and the Wrangler item) when the update is released via Steam on Thursday and there should be one more new item for the Engineer revealed just before the update goes live. In the meantime Valve continues to throw out item drops of Golden Wrenches to random players. You can also get a preview of Team Fortress 2's new achievements on the site (symbols and titles but no descriptions yet).
