Quake Wars Online revealed for Korean market

Id Software's free-to-play first person shooter Quake Live has been live for the better part of a year now but now it looks like another Quake-based game is going the free-to-play route, at least in Korea. Developer Splash Damage has just revealed Quake Wars Online, a game based on the developer's 2007 released Enemy Territory: Quake Wars multiplayer shooter.

Developed by Korean-based Dragonfly, Splash Damage says Quake War Online is currently moving into a public beta testing phase limited to 100,000 players. If you can read Korean you can find out more at the game's official web site. At the moments there's no word if Quake Wars Online will be made available to US players. You can check out a teaser trailer for the game after the jump.

Quake Wars used to demo upcoming Intel graphics chip

While AMD is launching their DirectX11 graphics chip today (and we presume Nvidia has plans of their own for new products) Intel has been working on their own dedicated PC graphics chip which has gone under the code name or Larrabee. This week the company showed off the first public demo of their technology at their Intel Developer Forum.

As you can see from the brief video above, Intel choose to use a modified version of a PC game to demonstrate their chip's support for ray tracing. The game is Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Intel actually took all of the content in the game and put it into its ray tracing tech to run on Larrabee. The result shows a more realistic looking level landscape along with some spectacular water textures. Larrabee is not expected to be released by Intel until sometime in 2010.

GoGamer.com has more PC game sales (including one for 50 cents)

Retail game web site GoGamer.com has started up yet another of their PC game sales. This particular one lasts until 3 am ET on Wednesday or while supplies of the game lasts. As per the usual with their sales the games are a mix of new titles and much older games at rock bottom prices.

In fact you can't get much more rock bottom in price than Maelstrom. The 2007 sci-fi RTS game from Codemasters is on sale for a mere 50 cents (and that's not a typo). Other games on sale include BlackSite: Area 51 for just $1.90, Battlestations Midway for $3.90 and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for just $4.90. On the other side of the spectrum you can pre-order the upcoming Wolfenstein game for $39.90, $10 off its normal price.

Feature: Happy 13th Birthday Quake

13 years ago today, id Software released Quake, the first game in a first person shooter franchise that continues to be one of the most well known in the PC gaming industry. With five full games based on the series, an number of official and unofficial expansion packs, tons of mods and total conversions and a currently running web browser online-only game, the Quake series continues to be popular even with major shift in emphasis.

On the day that the Quake series become a teenager, Big Download decided to look back at the entire game series. From it's start as a near-Doom clone to the Stroggos storyline to its multiplayer emphasis to its current incarnation as a free-to-play shooter, the series has had many different versions in a relatively short time span.

New GoGamer.com sale slashes prices on PC games

We are not sure why GoGamer.com calls their sales periods "48 Hour Madness" since most of the time they last much longer than that. Anyhoo . . . The game retail web site now has some PC games at some rock-bottom prices for their latest sale including a number of recently released titles.

They include Wanted: Weapons of Fate for $24.90 and Velvet Assassin for $23.90 (50 percent off their current normal price). Other games on sale include Command and Conquer: The First Decade for $17.90, Unreal Tournament 3 for $9.90, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for $4.90 and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for $7.90. Fable II lead designer joins Splash Damage

The folks at UK based Splash Damage continue to expand their team members. The Enemy Territory: Quake Wars creators have brought in new members from Ubisoft, BioWare and other developers this year. Today they have just announced they have hired Richard Ham from Lionhead to become their new creative director.

Ham was previously the lead designer at Lionhead for their just completed Xbox 360 RPG Fable 2. His previous credits include leading development of the Syphon Filter series for the original Playstation series along with games like The Movies and Fable: The Lost Chapters. Splash Damage is currently working on an unnamed multi-platform game for publisher Bethesda Softworks.

Novint Falcon support coming for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Yet another PC game has been added to the growing list of titles that support the unique Novint Falcon controller. This time it's for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, the multiplayer shooter released a year ago from Splash Damage, id Software and Activision. The free mod will be provided by the HaptX team.

The mod will be made available to download on Nov. 21 and will allow the player to feel the recoils of weapons and the feel of driving the various vehicles in the game. This mod also has support for HaptX's Force Balancing System which they claim "...allows for stronger recoils with less camera shakes. This allows the player to experience even more intense action without ever losing aim."

QuakeCon 2008: Money, t-shirts and a car given out on the final night

The final full day of QuakeCon 2008 ended on Saturday night with a marathon six hour event-party for the attendees. The results were that free food and beer (courtesy of id Software's John Carmack) were given to QuakeCon attendees and they got to see great Quake Live and Enemy Territory:Quake Wars matches along with some Guitar Hero playing, some prizes and t-shirts thrown out and a brand new Chevrolet Corvette given out to one very lucky QuakeCon participant.

In terms of the matches, The four member The Green Team won the Xbox 360 Enemy Territory: Quake Wars tournament over Cwell Fellas and won $5,000. The PC Enemy Territory: Quake Wars tournament was won by the six member Mamut.Si over second place Kompaniet and won $8,000. The Guitar Hero III 1v1 tournament was won by JW2 over Oni_link while Jimmy Crack Corn won against Pointless Thread in the 2v2 tournament.

Splash Damage brings in new blood

It looks like UK based developer Splash Damage is bringing in some new team members from outside the original group to help out with their future projects. The developer just announced that it has brought in former Ubisoft member Olivier Leonardi as its Art Director; he previously worked on Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Prince of Persia. Also brought into the Splash Damage fold is former Criterion Games member Chris Sweetman as Audio Director, former BioWare member Tim Appleby as Lead Character Artist and producer Chris Dawson who has worked on games like Driver, Evil Genius and Test Drive.

Splash Damage's has worked mostly with id Software for most of its life, first on the free Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory game (still a popular game online) and more recently on the multiplayer shooter Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. It recenty signed a deal with Bethesda Softworks to work on a new original unnamed action game.

MacMonday: Does Spore force your Mac to evolve?

Welcome to MacMonday, a weekly column where we'll talk about issues related to gaming on Apple's platform beyond "Why isn't PC Game X coming out on the Mac?" In this inaugural edition, let's discuss Spore, Will Wright's latest masterpiece.

At this point in time, the closest we can get to playing Spore properly (until its release in September) is to download the Creature Creator demo. Like any downloadable, the first thing you'll want to do is check the required specs to make sure your box can run the game properly. When you come to that, however, you'll see that the specs make two requirements upfront: an Intel Core Duo Processor, leaving PowerPC Macs out of the loop, and OS X 10.5.3 Leopard. Let's take a look at what this means for Mac gamers.
