EVE Online trailer shows future of EVE franchise

EVE Online continues to expand, not just in its player population but also for its future plans for content. At this weekend's EVE Fanfest in Iceland, the development team for the space-based MMO showed off a trailer that offers a glimpse of the game's future.

The trailer doesn't show real gameplay but does use the same engine that developer CCP Games is working on for its future projects. It shows how EVE Online's space-based game play will be merged with the planetary ground first person shooter combat that's the subject of the still mysterious console-only game Dust 514. It's all highly ambitious and if CCP can pull it off it will be something in gaming that is truly new.

EVE Online: Tyrannis expansion announced

Almost like clockwork, the developers at CCP Games cook up a new free expansion for their long running space-based MMO EVE Online every six to eight months or so. Today the developer officially announced their plans for their next expansion pack, EVE Online Tyrannis. Due out sometime this summer the expansion will finally allow players to mine minerals from the game's planets

Yes, that means planets in the game are no longer just eye candy. You will soon be able to set up structures to mine items from any planet in the EVE Online universe (yep, even gas giants). There's no planetary combat planned for the expansion; that's apparently being saved for the upcoming console shooter Dust 514 which will link up with EVE Online at some point.

DUST 514 Trailer launches the first strike

This is the premiere trailer for DUST 514, an upcoming sci-fi themed first-person shooter developed by CCP, the same company that created the MMO EVE Online. There are few details surrounding the game at this time, but it's planned to be a massively-multiplayer online shooter set in the EVE Online universe designed for console systems. CCP has yet to officially announce whether there will be a PC version, nor is there an expected release window.

CCP's Dust 514: A console game that links to PC's EVE Online

Last year EVE Online developer CCP showed off a video, without any commentary, at their annual Fan Fest that showed what appeared to be a sci-fi FPS title that looked a lot like Halo. Today, the developer officially revealed their plans for Dust 514 at GDC Europe, a console FPS that links up with EVE Online.

According to Gamasutra, CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson said that " infantry successes and failures" in Dust 514 will be reflected in EVE Online while players in EVE Online can "fund mercenaries and give them goals" for Dust 514. A release date for the game was not announced nor which consoles will be used. More info is expected to be revealed at CCP's next Fan Fest on October 1-3.
