Battlefield 3 12 minute Fault Line trailer is, well, awesome

Battlefield 3 is due out this fall and if the full 12 minute trailer for Digital Illusions' upcoming military first person shooter is any indication, the Call of Duty fan base might be considering a switch. The trailer (which has some language that is NSFW) takes us though just one mission in Iraq where your player character and his team encounter firefights, snipers, bombs and at the end a natural event.

The trailer's end also shows off some more snippets including tank battles, base jumping and fighter combat. It's going to be a long summer for fans before Battlefield 3 is released.

Digital Illusions: Consoles are holding PC games back

One of the big games of 2011 will be Battlefield 3 and the first person shooter's developer Digital Illusions has made no bones about stating that the PC port of the game will be the lead platform with the console versions being developed around the PC port. In a new interview over at Nvidia's GeForce.com web site, the game's executive producer Patrick Bach believes that consoles are in fact holding the development of PC games back.

He states, "Most games are actually still based on the same core idea that the consoles are your focus, the superior platform or something. I don't know why. That was the truth 5 years ago, but the world has moved on." He says that PCs are much more powerful, hardware wise, than consoles, and few PC games truly take advantage of all that hardware.

He says, "So for our target of what we want to hit, we are now using the more powerful platform to try and prove what we see gaming being in the future rather than using the lowest common denominator, instead of developing it for the consoles and then just adding higher resolution textures and anti-aliasing for the PC version. We're do it the other way around, we start with the highest-end technology that we can come up with and then scale it back to the consoles."

Battlefield 3 trailer shows off more war footage

Battlefield 3's creators at Digital Illusions continue to tease us with glimpses of gameplay from the upcoming first person shooter. Today sees the release of the third episode of the Fault Line trailer which shows off more of one of the game's missions.

The first half of the trailer shows some stealth action as a soldier tries to cut a wire that leads to an IED. The second half of the trailer is all shooting and action as we see lots of activity in the Middle Eastern war zone. The end of the trailer announces that the full gameplay footage from this Battlefield 3 demo, all 12 minutes of it, will be released on April 17.

Battlefield 3 offers up second part of in-game trailer

A couple of weeks ago we got the first part of a series of in-game trailers showing off the first footage from Battlefield 3. Today we got the second part of the sequence to the upcoming first person shooter, showing off even more graphical goodness from the Frostbite 2 engine developed by Digital Illusions.

The second part sees our four man US Marines fire time on top of a roof in the war torn Middle Eastern city. They have to deal with a particularly nasty sniper who is bent on killing all of them. The Marines see fit to try something akin to killing an ant with a sledgehammer. The third part of this gameplay footage from Battlefield 3 is scheduled for release on March 30. The game itself is due out this fall.

As we have reported previously, EA has a second similar game, Battlefield Play4Free, that is currently in closed beta testing.

EA Games head: "We're actively working on ideas" for Mirror's Edge follow-up

A few weeks ago reports hit the internet that a possible sequel to the 2008 sci-fi action game Mirror's Edge had been canceled. Now Computer and Video Games has posted up a chat with Electronic Arts' exec Frank Gibeau who said that the publisher is still looking to make a follow-up to the Digital Illusions-developed title.

Gibeau, the head of the EA Games brand, stated, "We're just trying to figure out how to bring Mirror's Edge back and in what way. That's part of the creative development process." He added that they were looking for ideas that would make the sequel sell two or three times as much as the original, stating, "We're actively working on ideas in the Mirror's Edge universe, we just haven't locked yet on a way to bring it back and a way that fans will be excited, but at the same time we can get it to a bigger audience."

Battlefield Play4Free open beta begins on April 4

Battlefield play4free
While there's been a lot of attention on Battlefield 3, the next game in the shooter series is in fact the free-to-play title Battlefield Play4Free. VG247.com reports that Electronic Arts plans to launch the open beta for the game on April 4.

Reporting from GDC 2011, EA states that over 600,000 people have already signed up to try out the closed beta for the game. People who signed up for the beta and have played Battlefield Bad Company 1 or 2 or Battlefield 1943 will access the open beta on March 31. The game's Twitter and Facebook followers will also get a chance to get into the open beta early on April 2. The final version is scheduled to launch this summer.

Battlefield 3 reveals first glimpses of in-game footage

Battlefield 3 is slowly showing itself to the public. This morning the upcoming military shooter's official web site showed off a brief trailer that shows snips and quick shots of in-game footage from Digital Illusions' latest game. The footage shows a US Marine squad dealing with the enemy in Iraqi Kurdistan. We now have a local downloadable version of the trailer available to check out.

Publisher Electronic Arts has also confirmed the contents of the Battlefield 3 Limited Edition. As we reported earlier this month, people who pre-order the Limited Edition will get Frostbite Engine 2 versions of four maps from the previous game in the series Battlefield 2, along with other vehicles and weapons from that game.

Report: Mirror's Edge 2 plans cancelled

Mirror's Edge was a near-future third person action game that was something different for developer Digital Illusions who is best know for all of the game's in the Battlefield shooter series. However the final product got some mixed reviews and wasn't a sales hit for publisher Electronic Arts.

While EA VP Patrick Soderlund said back in 2009 that there was a small team working on a follow-up to Mirror's Edge, a new report from the Sweden-based web site Press2Play now says those plans are cancelled. According to the report a prototype for a Mirror's Edge sequel was presented to EA execs but now that project has been stopped with Digital Illusions now working on other project (including, we assume, the upcoming Battlefield 3).

Report: Battlefield 3 PC to be lead platform; mod tools might not be released

As expected, info from this month's Game Informer cover story on Battlefield 3 is making its way onto the internet. A post on the NeoGAF message board has some bullet points on what was revealed in the article which gives the first details on developer Digital Illusions' next first person shooter.

The article states that the PC version of the game is the lead platform which is good news for people who might have been afraid that we would be getting a dumbed down console port. We won't reveal too much more about the bullet points in the post but one that is mentioned is that the game might not get mod tools with the post stating that the new Frostbite 2 engine is so complex that any mod tools would have to be dumbed down. The post hints that DICE might not want to put in any resources for that to happen.
