More Battlefield Bad Company 2 server downtime tonight [Update]

It has not been an easy time for fans of Battlefield Bad Company 2 to play their new first person shooter online. The game's main servers were down for part of the weekend and earlier this week the servers went down again for an extended maintenance period. Now comes word tonight (via the game's message boards) that the master servers at Electronic Arts are now down. No reason for the downtime was given.

This actually affects other games besides Battlefield Bad Company 2 but it does illustrate the kinds of issues a game can get when it is so tied into its online features. Hopefully this is just growing pains and that EA's IT guys can finally get things back up and running soon.

Update: EA has announced that the master servers are back up and running again.

Review: Battlefield: Bad Company 2

The Battlefield series has been running for quite a while. The last big entry in the series, Bad Company, was a console exclusive, much to the disappointment of PC gamers everywhere. DICE broke the exclusivity with the sequel, thankfully, and now PC owners are treated to the best Battlefield since Battlefield 2. However, under the veneer of slick graphics and slicker gameplay, Bad Company 2 struggles with a considerable amount of issues that can cripple the game for the average consumer. The one thing no one wants to buy is a broken game.

Could Battlefield Bad Company 2 be released to the Mac?

With the announcement that Valve would bring its line-up of games and its Steam download service to the Mac, there seems to be a resurgance of interest in releasing games for Apple's machines. The truth is that Apple doesn't seem to have much interest in gaming on their Macs and laptops (gaming for the iPhone and iPod touch is another matter) but if Steam is successful on the Mac that could change.

Right at the moment the big game on the PC is Battlefield Bad Company 2. The Universal Gaming Database web site contacted developer Digital Illusions to see if they had any plans to port their first person shooter for Apple's machines. The encouraging response was, "We're currently investigating the possibility of making BFBC2 available on Mac."

Downtime scheduled for Battlefield Bad Company 2 servers Wednesday

It looks like the problems with the Battlefield Bad Company 2 official online servers that started this weekend have crept up again today. There was some downtime earlier today on the servers for EA's recent first person shooter that the game's official blog site said, "was caused by a routing issue outside of EA's control." That issue has since been fixed.

However the blog also states that there will be some scheduled downtime for the game's official servers tomorrow. The downtime is scheduled to begin at 12 midnight Pacific time (that 3 am Wednesday for the Eastern time zone). There's no word yet on how long the downtime will last but developer Digital Illusions suggests following their official Twitter page for more info.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 has more PC players than Xbox 360 and PS3

Developer Digital Illusions didn't release the first Battlefield Bad Company game for the PC. Now we think they are regreting that decision because the second game in their first person shooter series, Battlefield Bad Company 2, has gotten a lot of players. How many? According to a post on the game's official message boards, the PC population of players is greater than the Xbox 360 and PS3 player base.

That's pretty good considering that the PC gamer population is supposing to be dying off and moving to the consoles. However there's been some server issues that have cropped up since the game's release earlier this week that the dev team is trying to fix. All in all, Battlefield Bad Company 2 seems to be a big hit, with a blog post stating, " . . . concurrent users in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 surpassed that in Battlefield 2 which has been going strong for almost 5 years."

Battlefield 3 "will blow people away" says former CEO of DICE

In June of 2009, an executive at Electronic Arts confirmed that Digital Illusions was indeed working on Battlefield 3 and that it was "a product that is looking very good." Now comes word from another source that the next game in the multiplayer shooter series is not only looking good, but that "it's going to absolutely blow everyone away."

Those words come from former DICE CEO Fredrik Liliegren, who left the developer in 2006 to help form a browser-based PC development studio called Antic Entertainment. However, in a chat with Gaming Union, he states that he still knows what DICE has planned for Battlefield 3, saying, " I can't tell you what it is, but it will blow people away." Strong words, especially from a source that hasn't been a part of DICE for over three years.
