desktop-tower-defense posts

Indie Showcase: March 17th, 2009

Welcome to the Indie Showcase, a semi-regular column on Big Download that takes a look at games we haven't covered on the site that we really think you should play.

Tower defense games have been around since the days of Starcraft. This incredibly niche market has traversed the realms of game mods to browser games to full-fledged releases. The big thing, though, is that when it comes down to thoughtful, action-packed strategy, there's not much better than tower defense games. Here's just a few of our favorites for you to peruse at your leisure.

Paper Blast brings desktop look to shooters

Almost anyone who plays browser games knows about the incredibly Desktop Tower Defense. It mixes the classic tower defense gameplay with an entertaining lo-fi, paper-looking aesthetic in a package that is completely irresistible. Jesse Venbrux, who we have reported on before (he created Mubbly Tower and Execution), has released his new shoot-'em-up for use to play that blends the looks of a cluttered office desk with sublime shmup gameplay.

It's a simple arena shooter designed to work entirely with the mouse, and at 5 mb, it's not hard on the disk space either. Use the left button to fire, and the right button to trigger your bomb. There is also an online high-score table (AKA leaderboard) on Venbrux's site as well. You can download the game off of YoYoGames.
