Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - January 15-16

Tomorrow is a holiday here in the US which means that news might be slower than usual. However things will pick up later this week, thanks to a couple of press events that are popping up.

DC Universe Online to feature regular monthly content updates

DC Universe Online launched earlier this week and so far there haven't been any major hiccups reported for Sony Online's super hero MMO game. In fact the game's PvP features are so popular that Sony Online has already launched two more PvP servers to keep up with the demand. Our sister site Massively has more info on that move with a new interview with Sony Online's Chris Cao.

So now that the game is now out in the open, what's next? Eurogamer chatted with Sony Online head man John Smedley who said that players in DC Universe Online can expect regular updates to the game. He states, "... the plans are about a month out you can start expecting major pieces of content and major new features to come in. We'll be adding all kinds of cool stuff." He wouldn't cop out to exactly what new content and features will be added but did say, "The monthly subscription fee means players can expect a lot of new content from us. And I say a lot - I really mean that."

DC Universe Online trailer makes you the next legend

DC Universe Online launches today, and those that decide to delve into the DC continuity with characters of their own will find a plethora of goodies awaiting them. This trailer doesn't really show any of that, though. It's mostly a pretty CGI trailer mixed with some normal gameplay footage, and while it's not that informative, it definitely gives us a good general feel of the game. DC Universe Online is a game that wants you to feel the weight of both combat and the story, and this trailer definitely gives that impression!

DC Universe Online trailer takes on mad scientists in the South Sea

Another trailer for DC Universe Online has popped up, and this time it's an alert zone! The zone in question is OOlong Island, a small island in the Sotuh Seas that appears to be swarming with androids and other experiments. WIth mad scientists, elemental research, and a grinning egg on spider legs, it certainly looks like an interesting - if unintentionally hilarious - alert zone. As with Blüdhaven, this appears to be a zone based around finding and eliminating one dagnerous superhuman more than anything else, although this alert zone is not quite so steeped in DC lore.

This week the PC gaming buying year gets its first major AAA title with a long awaited MMO title. We also get a RPG-RTS expansion pack that been years in the making (no lie) and an European imported action-adventure game.

DC Universe Online - Developer Sony Online, which already has a ton of MMO game experience, launched its latest subscription-based game. This time the setting is the vast DC Comics super hero setting where players will be able to create their own original super heroes and super villains and ally themselves with legendary characters like Superman, Batman, Joker and Lex Luthor.

DC Universe Online trailer takes you to Blüdhaven

During the Infinite Crisis even in DC continuity, the supervillain Chemo was dropped on the city of Blüdhaven, Nightwing's home city. It has been a while since the devastation, and the city is filled with toxic waste and mutated creatures everywhere. The latest trailer for DC Universe Online explores the efforts of the DC universe to clean up Blüdhaven, and it gives a good look into the mechanics of alert zones. It's also interesting to note that both heroes and villains want to clean up the city. Are the villains out to rebuild so that they can re-establish a base of power within the city? Who knows!

DC Universe Online gets January 11 release date; lifetime subscription offered

DC Universe Online finally has a release date and after being delayed from a previously announced November 2010 release, developer/publisher Sony Online clearly wants to get its long awaited super hero MMO to the masses. In a new chat with IGN it was revealed that the game will be released on January 11. It's due out on January 14 for UK gamers.

The game will be coming out for both the PC and PS3 and will have 30 days of free online time with the game's purchase price of $49.99. DC Universe Online takes you on a tour of Gotham

If you are familiar with the Batman comics, you'll get a wave of deja vu as you watch this newest DC Universe Online trailer. Set in Gotham, it's a simple showcase of all the different areas a player can visit. While it's said to be a flythorugh, this isn't quite accurate. After all, it doesn't seamlessly transition from area to area. The trailer gets out the major locations (Arkham Asylum, Crime Alley, ACE Chemicals) out of the way before going to the less well-known, but still very important, areas. If you want a glance at how Sony Online is treating the Batman mythos for their new MMO, here is your chance. There's nothing really fantastic about this one, though.
