Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - September 24

If you been good all week, we are betting that this weekend will see a bunch of you knee deep in Civilization V. Admit it.

Darksiders PC pre-order offers include free games

PC gamers will soon be able to play their own version of Darksiders, the action-adventure game from developer Vigil Games and publisher THQ that was first released for consoles back in January. The PC port is now scheduled for release on September 23 but folks who pre-order the game on Steam and Direct2Drive will get some extras.

The pre-order offer on Steam includes a free download of Titan Quest Gold, the cult hit action-RPG from the now defunct developer Iron Lore. If you put your money down for the game early at Direct2Drive's site you will be able to download a free copy of the third person shooter Red Faction: Guerrilla. While the game will require Steam to play it doesn't appear to support Steamworks features like achievements.

THQ reports latest financial results

Yet another publicly traded publisher has revealed its financial results for the last quarter. THQ reported today that for the three month period that ended on June 30 it brought in $149.4 million in revenue. This is much lower than the $243.5 million that THQ brought in for the same period a year ago. Overall, the company recorded a loss of $30.1 million for the quarter compared to a profit of $6.4 million for the same period a year ago. THQ said these numbers were in line with its previous predictions.

THQ has a number of PC game projects due out in the coming months including Company of Heroes Online, Homefront, the PC port of Darksiders, Red Faction Armageddon, Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine and the long-in-development MMO Warhammer 40,000 Dark Millennium.

Darksiders PC confirmed for September; gets some extras

While retailer web sites and even Steam had already moved the release date of the Darksiders PC port from June to September, publisher THQ's UK web site has finally confirmed that the third person action game from developer Vigil Games will be released in that part of the world on September 24.

The UK web site has also revealed that the PC port, at least in that country, will be getting some extras in the form of a "Hellbook" (catchy). The book will contains a comic book and concept artwork from the game drawn by comic book artist Joe Madureira (who now works at Vigil Games). It will also contain the game's soundtrack on CD.

Darksiders merchandise announced for Comic-Con

While PC gamers wait patiently for the release of the PC port of Darksiders sometime in September publisher THQ has announced plan to release merchandise related to the action game from developer Vigil Games. Two of these items will debut during this July's San Diego Comic-Con.

One of them is The Art of Darksiders,a book containing tons of concept artwork from the game. It will be released in a limited print run at Comic-Con by Udon Entertainment and will be generally be released in October. Also SOTA Toys will show off a 14 inch statue of the lead character in the game WAR during Comic-Con. The statue will be the first of a series based on Darksiders and will be sold sometime later this year.

Darksiders 2 confirmed by THQ

For some odd reason some game publishers like to have a financial analyst conference call during E3 2010. One of the companies that did so was THQ. During its conference call publisher execs managed to confirm a sequel to one of their best selling 2010 titles.

That title is Darksiders, the third person action game from THQ's Vigil Games division. The sequel, Darksiders 2, has already been greenlighted for production, according to a THQ exec, but that the game won't be showing up until 2012. PC owners will get their port of the original Darksiders this September.
