Mass Effect 2 ships two million copies; comic book issue free (on iPhone)

There's no doubt that Electronic Arts is going to sell a lot of copies of Mass Effect 2. The sci-fi RPG sequel from developer BioWare is getting excellent reviews all around and this week the publisher said that the game has "sold-in" over two million copies worldwide already. Before you go nuts, that term doesn't mean "sold to customers" but rather "shipped to stores". It's still impressive but not quite what you might think it is.

In related news, Dark Horse Comics has announced that their first issue of their Mass Effect Redemption comic book series will be released on the iPhone on February 3. Even cooler is that the iPhone version will be free for a brief period of time before going up to its normal 99 cent price.

No Aliens Vs Predator special edition for PC gamers?

It's looking like PC gamers, at least in the US, will be denied the chance to purchase a special edition of the upcoming PC version of Aliens Vs Predator. A post on the Sega web site confirms that while the "Hunter Edition" of the upcoming first person shooter is coming to consoles there's no mention of it showing up for the PC.

That's a shame because the US version of the Hunter Edition will actually have an extra item that won't be in the European version that we reported on previously. That extra item is an AVP comic book from Dark Horse Comics. Oh well. At least the PC version will support DirectX11 graphics.

The Guild heads to comics in March 2010

The MMO-themed web series The Guild has become a huge internet sensation and now the online sitcom about a group of massively multiplayer game players and their real world interactions with each other is getting translated to comics. Comic Book Resources has posted word that the three-issue mini-series from Dark Horse Comics will release its first issue in March 2010.

The mini-series is written by The Guild's creator and star Felicia Day and will take place before the start of the web series as we see her character Cyd meet the fellow members of her guild for the first time and learn how she came up with her MMO character Codex. Art for the series will be by Jim Rugg. The first issue will be released with the choice of two covers; one by Georges Jeanty and the other (shown to the right) by Cary Nord.

Star Wars: The Old Republic web comic to be collected in paperback

Several months ago, BioWare and LucasArts teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to present a continuing online comic book series based on the upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. A few pages of the comic at a time have been released on the game's official web site ever since.

But sometimes you want to read a comic where a PC, even a laptop, should not go. So Dark Horse plans to collect the first 27 online "issues" of the series into one 96 page softcover collection. The series, written by Rob Chestney and drawn by Alex Sanchez, serves as a prequel to the events in the MMO and will be released to comic book stores on April 28.

Check out new preview of Mass Effect comic's first issue

Last summer Dark Horse Comics announced plans to release Mass Effect: Redemption, a four-issue comic based on BioWare's sci-fi RPG series. Now the Comic Book Resources web site has secured the first six pages of the first issue for everyone to check out.

Co-written by BioWare's own Mac Walters, the first issue of the monthly four issue mini-series ships to stores in January 2010 As we reported on earlier this month, BioWare's other big RPG game, Dragon Age: Origins, will also be getting a comic book series in January via IDW Publishing. The regular monthly comic is scheduled to be written by Orson Scott Card.

Dark Horse to publish Mass Effect comic book in 2010

The comic book announcements this week keep on coming thanks to the San Diego Comic Con. Today Electronic Arts announced that Dark Horse Comics will release a four issue mini-series titles Mass Effect: Redemption that ties into the upcoming sci-fi RPG sequel Mass Effect 2.

The comic's storyline is written by Mac Walters, BioWare's lead scriptwriter for Mass Effect 2. The script will be written by comic book veteran John Jackson Miller and drawn by Omar Francia. According to EA, the comic's storyline deals with events after " . . . Commander Shepard disappears and is left without the support of the crew on the Normandy in the lawless Terminus Systems. Shepard must fight for survival, and will be assisted by close companion, Dr. Liara T'Soni, to come home alive. "

The first issue of the comic book will be released by Dark Horse on January 2010. Walters and Francia will be signing an exclusive Mass Effect card at Dark Horse's booth during Comic-Con on July 24 from 4-5 pm.

Star Wars: The Old Republic online comic launches

As previously announced earlier this month at the New York Comic Con, BioWare has now launched an online comic book that will serve as a prequel to their upcoming MMO title Star Wars: The Old Republic. The comic book can be found on the game's official web site and is being created with the help of long time Star Wars comic book publisher Dark Horse Comics.

The presentation is very well handled, using a Flash interface and high-res pages. The story itself is written by BioWare team member Rob Chestney and drawn by comics veteran Alex Sanchez. There will be three pages released twice a month on the site and the series itself is designed to be read as a full six issue mini-series (presumably each issue has about 21 or 24 pages).

Dark Horse to publish Star Wars: The Old Republic online comic book

Dark Horse Comics has been the publisher for the Star Wars line of comic books for many years and have released a number of comics based on various Star Wars video and PC games. Today Dark Horse and BioWare jointly announced plans to release an online-only comic book based on Star Wars: The Old Republic, the upcoming MMO game that BioWare is developing for LucasArts and EA.

The online comic will launch later this month with new "issues" appearing every other Friday on the game's official web site. The series will be written by BioWare's own Rob Chestney and feature art by Alex Sanchez. It will serve as a prequel to the events that will occur in the game. You can check out a early pencil page from the comic right here.
