Dante's Inferno movie adaptation gets a screenwriter

Last year Electronic Arts was revealed to be shopping around a movie version of its upcoming Dante's Inferno game to movie studios . . . even before the game itself was officially announced. Now with the action game out in the open and slated for an early 2010 release, the movie deal is also moving forward.

Variety reports that Dan Harris, who has previous movie writing credits like X2: X-Men United and Superman Returns, will handle the screenplay for the Dante's Inferno movie for previously announced studio Universal Pictures. EA execs will be involved in the movie version as well. No director or filming start date for the movie has been announced.

First previews and screenshots reveal more on Dante's Inferno game

Electronic Arts is taking on a truly classic work of literature with its upcoming game adaptation of Dante's Inferno. This week the first previews of the game started popping up on the Interwebs tubes, with sites like IGN, Eurogamer and Gamespot getting their first glimpse of the title created by EA's Redwood Shores team.

The game itself places you in the role of Dante Alighieri himself as he navigates through all nine circles (or, if you like, levels) of Hell. However your version of Dante in the game isn't a wimpy writer dude. He's a scythe-wielding action man who takes out demons and monsters with weapons and magic spells. There's even some moral choices to be made; you can punish lost souls which results in quick reward or absolve them which makes the player go through a mini-game that if successful will grant even more rewards. EA has also released the first in-game screenshots from the title which is scheduled for release in early 2010.

Dante's Inferno trailer dives into Hell

This cinematic trailer for the upcoming survival horror game, Dante's Inferno, provides some early glimpses or what players can expect. Based (very) loosely on the epic poem "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri, players will have to traverse through the nine rings of hell and confront the horrible sins they represent. Of course, it's probably safe to say players will see much more demon and soul slaying action in the game than in the poem.

Video-PC game action figures shown at Toy Fair 2009

The annual Toy Fair is underway in New York City and alongside the typical new and upcoming action figures shown at the show for things like Marvel and DC super heroes, Star Wars, G.I.Joe and the like, there are quite a few new action figures based on games.

Figures.com has images from the show floor on many of these toys, including new entries in the Halo series from McFarlane Toys and Gears of War from NECA. The latter company is also showing off a number of other upcoming figures from games like Dead Space and the upcoming Prototype (show above) and Dante's Infermo. We are still waiting to see some Team Fortress 2 action figures; we might actually buy them.

Dante's Inferno trailer goes to hell

EA Redwood Studios, the developers of Dead Space, is working on Dante's Inferno - a new horror game based loosely on the medieval epic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. The game will be a third-person action game where the main character, who happens to be named Dante, makes his way through the nine circles of hell in pursuit of his beloved Beatrice. We're guessing that the game will include a lot more combat than the poem does.

Universal wins movie rights to still unannounced EA game

Last week Variety reported that Electronic Arts was shopping around an upcoming and unannounced game to movie studios. The game itself, a modern retelling of the epic poem Dante's Inferno, still hasn't been announced but today Variety reports that Universal Studios has won the battle to make the movie version of the game.

The movie itself will be produced by Strike Entertainment (best known for their remake of Dawn of the Dead that launched Zach Snyder's movie directing career) but no writer or director has been announced. Indeed, EA still has yet to announce the game itself which Variety states is scheduled for release late in 2009.

EA developing Dante's Inferno-based game?

Electronic Arts made a number of announcements in Thursday's financial press release and conference call. However, Variety claims that there is at least one upcoming game that until now EA has kept a secret. That game is currently being titled "Dante's Inferno" since it is supposed to be a modern retelling of the classic poem of a man's journey through the levels of Hell.

Variety got wind of the game because EA is attempting to sell it to movie studios even before it's officially announced. Supposedly Universal, Paramount, New Regency and MGM are interested in buying the movie rights to the game which is expected to be released late in 2009.
