Combat Arms gets new Last Man Standing game mode

Nexon continues to update its free-to-play first person shooter Combat Arms with new content that almost seems to come in monthly doses. This week players of the game will be able to check out the new Last Man Standing gameplay mode. The mode is pretty self-explanatory; up to 16 soldiers fight it out to be the only one left in matches that can go up to nine rounds.

There's also a new variant on the game's zombie-filled Quarantine Mode called Quarantine Mode: Regen. This time the zombies can regenerate their hit posts by keeping still for three seconds. The update also adds new weapons and items such as the M39 EMR Desert sniper rifle (which you can see above). Finally the game gets a UI and HUD makeover with this new update.

Combat Arms adds new character, map and more for Thanksgiving

The free-to-play first person shooter Combat Arms from publishers Nexon is celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with a bunch of new content for players to "feast" (hehe) over. A new character, pictured above, called Hawk has been added to the game's line-up. He's described as a "mysterious newcomer coming from an elite group of Specialists". Well, of course he is.

A new map (shown above) called Road Kill has also been added to the game. It's described as a winding road filled with abandoned trucks that make it perfect for some sniper kills. There's also a new napalm strike designator that's been added to the game and for Thanksgiving players can hit enemies with a turkey leg melee weapon or wear a turkey balaclava as head gear. On Black Friday, Combat Arms will have its own in-game item sale with some Black Market items discounted down 25 percent. The full game client can be downloaded here.

Combat Arms map video digs its own grave

The free-to-play shooter Combat Arms released the zombie Quarantine mode over the summer, so what better way is there to celebrate the Halloween season than with a new map called Grave Digger? Grave Digger, shown in this video, will be included in the next game update.

"Located in a monastery near a small central European city, this new map supports Elimination, Elimination Pro, Capture the Flag and One Man Army games. In a building intended to keep peace, the battle rages on ... and there can only be one winner."

Nexon America records another big jump in revenues

The free-to-play model for online PC games seems to be working for some game developers. Earlier this week we reported that the change to such a model for Turbine's fantasy MMO Dungeons and Dragons Online has been a big success. Now Nexon America, which runs a number of similar games. has announced big percentage increases for revenues for its third quarter and September time periods

According to their press release, revenues for their third quarter (July-September) were higher by 36 percent. Revenues for September were up 44 percent. As usual, Nexon America did not reveal specific revenue numbers nor did they reveal if the company generated profits. Nexon America's launched the open beta for their next game, Dungeon Fighter Online, earlier this month and that will certainly generate even more money for the company.

In related news, Nexon announced that their FPS game Combat Arms will add a "casual server" called Foxtrot for new players. In addition new weapons, including a rocket launcher, are available for use in the game.

It's going to be a Block Party over at Nexon.net soon

If you are a fan of Nexon's free-to-play online games like Combat Arms and most recently Dungeon Fighter Online, you might have seen some weird animations show up on top of the Nexon.net web site this week. It's OK, you can go ahead and click on them. If you do they reveal some big changes in store for the Nexon.net site.

The biggest change is that Nexon.net will soon be no more. It will be replaced by Blockparty.com, a new site that will have a lot of Facebook-like social networking features. Yes you will still be able to access all of your Nexon games at the new site but you will also be able to do things like create a profile, message buddies and in general have more of an interactive experience with Nexon gamers even when you are not playing the games. There's no word on when Blockparty.com will go live.

Playing For Free: Combat Arms

Each week we find more and more free games that do not quite fit into the freeware mold. Games that do not require a subscription fee to play, but encourage player usage of money through microtransactions or special subscription services. This is Playing For Free, a column that showcases these games.

There are a lot of free-to-play action games out there. Some of them are great, and some of them are terrible. Then there are those that are great games but suffer from a poor community. Combat Arms falls into this category. It's a good shooter, if relatively rote, but it suffers from stats padding and hacking accusations. If you can find a good group to play with, you'll have an absolute blast. Just don't expect public games with strangers to be all that entertaining, thanks to getting booted all the time.
