New City of Heroes commerical expansion, Going Rogue, revealed

NCsoft is preparing a major new commercial expansion for their five year old super hero MMO City of Heroes. News of the expansion, titled Going Rogue, was leaked out via an email blast that apparently was sent a tad too early. However, forum posts from the game's developer Paragon Studios have confirmed that Going Rogue is indeed a real and upcoming project.

Going Rogue will expand the game's territory to a new alternate universe with a city called Praetoria and like the classic Star Trek episode "Mirror Mirror" it depicts heroes in the normal City of Heroes universe as villains and vice-versa. An all new alignment system "explores the shades of gray that lie between Heroes and Villains" in the expansion. A teaser site for Going Rogue has already launched with a CGI trailer. There no word yet on a release date for this new expansion

NCsoft's bold decision to allow their super hero MMO City of Heroes to add its own mission editor has apparently been a huge success. The game's official web site has a new message from the game's producer Matt Miller who states that in just the first 24 hours after the Mission Architect was launched in the game, the amount of new content created by the game's players ' . . . surpasses the amount of content that we, the developers, have made for all of City of Heroes and City of Villains combined."

Specifically in the first 24 hours 3,800 mission arcs were created by users for City of Heroes. By the end of the first week, the game had "20,000 published arcs up and playable." To get our views on the Mission Architect make sure to check out our own hands-on impressions.

NCsoft renames City of Heroes dev team Paragon Studios

Hot on the heels of last week's release of the Mission Architect update for City of Heroes, publisher NCsoft has renamed the super hero MMO's dev team. Previously known by the rather generic NCSoft NorCal, the Mountain View, CA based dev team will now be called Paragon Studios.

Since breaking off from the game's original developer Cryptic Studios in the fall of 2007, the City of Heroes development team has expanded from 20 people to 50 team members while continuing to support and provide free update to the MMO. With the rebranding of the team as Paragon Studios its general manager Brian Clayton states that the team will " . . . . continue providing high quality experiences for City of Heroes and any future projects that come from Paragon Studios." The renaming of the studio comes the same week that a new retail version of City of Heroes heads to stories, containing all of the game's content including the Mission Architect features.

Review: City of Heroes Issue 14 Mission Architect

Issue 14, the latest free content for City of Heroes, released last week making it the first MMO that allows users to create their own custom content and story arcs. With the straightforward title Architect, this issue takes a unique approach to content expansion by putting all the power into players' hands and imaginations. The update focuses exclusively on bringing players the Mission Architect tool, which gives player access to every map, character and scripted event available in the game. In effect, by offering one major feature, City of Heroes released the biggest content expansion it or any other game has ever seen.
