Dev diary gives details on City of Heroes i16 Power Proliferation

Both City of Heroes and its counterpart, City of Villains will be seeing some major changes when the upcoming Issue 16: Power Spectrum update releases. Most notably, Issue 16 will allow players to customize the look of their powers with different colors and, in some cases, specialized animations. However, players will be seeing another benefit in the form of Power Proliferation, where archetypes will be getting a few new powersets to toy with. A recent developer diary written by Senior Designer Floyd Grubb discusses changes to the Scrapper and Tanks, which will both get electric melee. Switching over to the dark side of things, Dominators can look forward to adding Earth Assault to their repertoire. With a little luck, players will see the release of i16 sometime in the fall. New screenshots are available, and the full developer diary can be read after the jump.

New City of Heroes commerical expansion, Going Rogue, revealed

NCsoft is preparing a major new commercial expansion for their five year old super hero MMO City of Heroes. News of the expansion, titled Going Rogue, was leaked out via an email blast that apparently was sent a tad too early. However, forum posts from the game's developer Paragon Studios have confirmed that Going Rogue is indeed a real and upcoming project.

Going Rogue will expand the game's territory to a new alternate universe with a city called Praetoria and like the classic Star Trek episode "Mirror Mirror" it depicts heroes in the normal City of Heroes universe as villains and vice-versa. An all new alignment system "explores the shades of gray that lie between Heroes and Villains" in the expansion. A teaser site for Going Rogue has already launched with a CGI trailer. There no word yet on a release date for this new expansion

Rumor: Cryptic to pitch Champions Online to City of Heroes customers?

When you have a super hero MMO that's already well established, it's natural to think that the developers of another upcoming super hero MMO might want to see if players from the established game would like to try their up-and-comer out. However it's another thing entirely if said developer of the up-and-coming game is actively recruiting players from the established MMO via in-game messages and forum posts.

According to a post at f13.net, that's exactly what they claim Cryptic Studios is doing. The original developers of City of Heroes are accused of using such methods to get players of the game (now owned and operated by NCsoft) to beta test Cryptic's Champions Online. Our sister site Massively said they have asked Cryptic for comment but so far there's been no response. This kind of behavior is considered to be unprofessional and would certainly put Cryptic's solid reputation at risk if it is proven to be true.

City of Heroes to finally release Mission Architect in March

After what seems like years of waiting, NCsoft has finally announced that the long awaited Mission Architect, features for their super hero MMO City of Heroes will finally be released this March as a free download to the game's subscribers. The features were supposed to be released as part of the "13th Issue" update last fall but got delayed until the upcoming "Issue 14" update.

As we have previously reported the Mission Architect will allow players to create their own custom missions for City of Heroes. Both single missions and entire story arcs will be able to be made with details like new enemies, environments and mission objectives. There will also be the ability to put in written fiction and character dialog. If certain folks make good enough missions it could lead to unlocking new rewards for them. Our sister site Massively has more info on the release including an hour-long audio with NCsoft's Joe Morrissey as he talks about the upcoming update.
