City of Heroes Going Rogue getting free weekend in October

Last month, developer Paragon Studios and publisher NCsoft released Going Rogue, the first commercial expansion pack in many years for its super hero MMO City of Heroes. But some subscribers of the game have yet to check out the new expansion pack.

That's why NCsoft is launching an upcoming free play weekend for City of Heroes that will allow new, current and former subscribers to try out the new content in the Going Rogue expansion. The free play begins at 11 am Eastern time on Thursday October 7 and ends at 2:59 am Eastern time on Monday, October 11. In related news next weekend's New York Comic-Con will have a City of Heroes panel. NCsoft is also holding a meet-and-greet event on October 8 at the Hudson Hotel in New York City where City of Heroes players can get a code for an exclusive in-game costume (the Rikti Mentalist).

This Week In PC Games: August 16-22

After a fairly slow couple of weeks in new PC game releases, this week brings two major titles to retail stores. One of the is a sequel to a controversial third person shooter while the other is a expansion pack to a long running MMO title.

Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days: Even though the original game didn't get the best reviews, developer Io Interactive and publisher Square Enix have decided to release this sequel to the 2008 third person shooter with the somewhat nuts duo of Kane and Lynch doing what they do best: killing people. The game features online co-op for the campaign and the multiplayer Fragile Alliance mode returns for the sequel.

Going Rogue videos unveil an all-new city

The City of Heroes: Going Rogue expansion is expected to release shortly, and players can expect to explore the all-new area of Praetoria when it does. Praetoria is a mirror universe where versions of the game's signature heroes conquered the world and established a utopia with a very strict sense of peace. Beneath the shimmering city is an underground where the resistance gathers its forces. The developer video above discusses all the sights players can expect, highlighted with the recent 'Ultra-mode' graphics overhaul the game recently received. Continue after the jump to watch a flythrough video featuring the Neutopolis and Imperial City areas.

City of Heroes: Going Rogue is scheduled to go live on August 17th. Players can pre-purchase the game from the NCsoft store to gain early access to the new powers and abilities.

City of Heroes announces plans for Shades of Gray free update

Developer Paragon Studios and publisher NCsoft still plan to release Going Rogue, the commercial expansion pack for its super hero MMO City of Heroes, in mid-August. But players of the game will still be getting free content updates. This week the game's official web site revealed plans for the latest such update: Issue 18 - Shades of Gray.

In addition to adding a major new "trial" for City of Heroes players to fight through called Cathedral of Pain (sounds kinky) Shades of Gray will add a number of new features like a tips system that lets enemies drop notes or clues that are the start of a new mission. The game's auction house will be open to all players (good or bad) and more additions are planned. There's no word yet on when Shades of Gray will be released but it should be at or near the time Going Rogue is released.

E3 2010 Interview: We chat with the lead designer of City of Heroes: Going Rogue

First there was the City of Heroes. Then came the City of Villains. There wasn't much confusion about this set up. One was all good and the other was all evil. Yet the super hero MMO titles from developer Paragon Studios (taking over from the game's original creators Cryptic Studios) have continued to expand, thanks to free content updates and more recently the launch of the player-based Mission Architect.

Now the studio and publisher NCsoft are close to releasing City of Heroes: Going Rogue. This new commercial expansion puts in some shades of gray in our heroes and villains as we explore a new parallel universe. Big Download got the game's lead designer Melissa Bianco to answer our questions about Going Rogue which is due out this July.

City of Heroes: Going Rogue developer video takes superpowers to the next level

In City of Heroes and City of Villains, players have the chance to create custom superheroes (or villains) and battle it out in Liberty City for the fate of the world. The newest expansion, Going Rogue, is expected to release next month and it will take the game to a whole new level by allowing villainous characters redeem themselves to become heroes or vice versa. Characters can also make a complete circle in their progression, as is often done in comic books. Players will have a chance to go rogue when the game releases on July 20th.

City of Heroes: Going Rogue trailer calls forth demons to do its bidding

City of Heroes fans that attended PAX East were treated to a first look at some of the powers that will be included in the Going Rogue expansion. A few weeks ago, pre-purchase players were able to put some slick sharpshooting into action with dual pistols. Soon those players will be able to employ demon summoning. This trailer provides a glimpse of what's in store.

City of Heroes: Going Rogue trailer goes gun toting

City of Heroes players are now able to live out their John Woo movie fantasies with the the Dual Pistols power set, available now to customers that pre-order the Going Rogue expansion. This comes just in time for the Double XP and free reactivation weekend happening on March 4-7, so heroes and villains can get right to work building up those gun toting skills. As demonstrated by this trailer, the Dual Pistols are pretty slick, with moves that look inspired by movies like Wanted and Equilibrium. Demon Summoning is expected to become available in April, and we're hoping the release of Issue 17 will happen around the same time.

The City of Heroes: Going Rogue expansion officially releases in July. Players can pre-purchase from the official website.
