Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 in the works?

One of the biggest selling PC game franchises may be getting a new entry several years after the last game in the series was released. Of course we are talking about Rollercoaster Tycoon, the amusement park sim game that was first released by the reclusive UK developer Chris Sawyer in 1999.

There hasn't been a new title in the series since 2004 when Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 was released by Atari. However a recent message board post by an Atari team members on the publisher's message boards states, "We are thinking hard about the next Rollercoaster Tycoon game on PC." The publisher is soliciting fan ideas for the game's feature set. There's no word on who might be developing the game or when it might be released.

A Rollercoaster Tycoon movie? Yep.

We have heard about games being licensed for movies like Pac-Man or Battleship that don't seem to have any real storyline hook. Now comes word from The Hollywood Reporter (via their Heat Vision blog) that one of the most popular PC game franchises of all time may be getting the movie treatment.

Sony Pictures Animation has secured the rights to, of all games, Rollercoaster Tycoon, the amusement pack sim series that was originally created by the reclusive designer Chris Sawyer. The many games and expansion packs in the series have sold millions of copies over the years. However there hasn't been a new game in the series for five years and Sawyer sued the game's publisher Atari for alleged lack of royalty payments.

The movie version is expected to mix live action with CGI. Harald Zwart, who previously directed films like Agent Cody Banks, The Pink Panther 2 and the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid, is reportedly in charge of the Rollercoaster Tycoon movie.

The tycoon genre of games is a popular one, and for good reason. The accessibility of a good interface mixed with the appeal of creating and managing your own business is a recipe for an instant hit. Not many games, however, can be truly said to be classics of the tycoon genre. As far as we know, there's only three games which really deserve that distinction. The first is Railroad Tycoon, one of Sid Meier's first games and the father of the modern business game. The second is Transport Tycoon, which was created by Chris Sawyer as a more in-depth transportation simulation than Railroad Tycoon. The final game, and the focus of this article, is Rollercoaster Tycoon, one of the most popular and enduring tycoon games of all time. It has snatched hold of the casual and hardcore market alike with excellent gameplay and interface, and is still popular to this day.
