Call of Duty Black Ops Zombie co-op mode confirmed; Combat Training revealed

Confirming one of the most poorly kept secrets in gaming, publisher Activision has announced that there will be a zombie co-op mode in its upcoming first person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops. The mode was first introduced by the game's developer Treyarch in its previous game in the series, Call of Duty: World at War, where up to four players faced off against waves of Nazi zombies.

Specific details about the zombie co-op mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops have yet to be revealed. However Activision did reveal that there will also be another six player co-op mode in the game called Combat Training where players can increase their character rank going up against enemy AI.

Rumor: Call of Duty Black Ops zombie multiplayer mode reveal soon?

Two years ago, developer Treyarch surprised us with the reveal that its upcoming WWII shooter Call of Duty: World at War would have a Nazi Zombie co-op mode. The mode was so popular that additional maps were released as DLC. It was even given a stand alone game release on the iPhone.

So when Treyarch finally announced plans for its next game, Call of Duty: Black Ops many expected some kind of zombie multiplayer feature to be included. So far Treyarch hasn't officially admitted that such a mode will be included in Black Ops. However this week the developer's community manager Josh Olin made some posts on his Twitter account that they have a secret co-op mode that's yet to be revealed. When asked by a Twitter follower if it involved zombie Olin replied, "If Zombies have anything to do with our top-secret Co-Op mode, then it's a safe bet there will be a trailer for it eventually..." It's not a confirmation but it certainly sounds like something's up.

Call of Duty: Black Ops won't have co-op in single player campaign

In 2008, developer Treyarch finally brought co-op support to the Call of Duty franchise with a co-op mode in the WWII shooter Call of Duty: World at War's single player campaign. It also had the surprising cool four player Nazi Zombie mode. However it looks like Treyarch is doing something a bit different for the co-op modes for their follow-up Call of Duty: Black Ops.

MTV reports that Call of Duty: Black Ops won't have co-op support for the game's single player campaign. However Treyarch's studio head Mark Lamia states, "We're crafting unique co-op modes around that experience, but it is different than what people think." Hopefully the team is coming up with something even cooler than Nazi zombies.

Call of Duty: Black Ops officially named; coming November 9

Activision is still being cagey about what the next Call of Duty game will be all about but today the publisher decided to reveal the name of their next shooter title in the series. As was rumored a while back the game will be called Call of Duty: Black Ops. Developed by Treyarch the game will be released on November 9.

The official press release is still not announcing the game's setting (although online reports claim it will be a Vietnam War-era title). There's also no word if Treyarch will put in a zombie mode as they did for their last game Call of Duty: World at War. Remember the first teaser trailer is scheduled to be shown on Spike's GameTrailers TV show later tonight

Next Call of Duty game to be revealed on GameTrailers Friday

The GameTrailers TV show on the Spike cable network has had its share of first reveals and this Friday it will have a big one as it will have the first teaser trailer for the next game in Activision's Call of Duty shooter franchise. The show itself starts at 12:40 am Eastern time but you can bet the trailer will be shown near the end of the program.

Officially all we know about the new game is that its due out this fall and that its being made by the Treyarch development team who made 2008's Call of Duty: World at War. Rumors have had the game set in the Korean and/or Vietnam War or perhaps in many different decades. There are also rumors of a new zombie mini-game in this installment similar to the one in World at War. With all of the current chaos surrounding the Call of Duty franchise it will be interesting to see what the publisher has in store for its immediate future.

Activision to charge $15 for Modern Warfare 2 PC Stimulus Package map pack

While previous official downloadable map packs for the Call of Duty series have been free to download for PC owners, it looks like publisher Activision is changing course for the latest game in the first person shooter series Modern Warfare 2. The Steam web site is now taking pre-orders for the Stimulus Package map pack. The pack will normally cost $14.99 but you can get it for 10 percent off if you put down your money before its released on May 4.

Just a reminder: The map pack contains five multiplayer levels. Two of the maps are recreations from developer Infinity Ward's previous game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare while the other three are all new maps.

Activision's second half of 2010 is full of returning franchises

Activision Blizzard typically waits until the second half of the calendar year to release the majority of its game titles and it looks like 2010 will be no exception. During their quarterly financial conference call company execs said that a number of its franchises will be returning for new installments.

Without going into any specific game or developer details, execs said the second half of the year will see new entries in, among others, the Call of Duty, James Bond, Spider-Man and True Crime franchises. All of these are expected to have a PC port (indeed the revived True Crime game is already confirmed for the PC). The next Call of Duty game is generally expected to be developed by Treyarch and will be set in an historical war time period (although it might not be World War II this time).
