First Call of Duty: World at War screenshots look familiar

Activision is clearly hoping that people who pick up their latest Call of Duty game release this fall will once again want to head back to the WWII time period to shoot Nazis. Ok, so you are also going to be shooting members of the Imperial Japanese army as well during the game's Pacific campaign but let's face it; shooting Nazis is always far more statisfying

Anyway you can now check out the first official screenshots from Call of Duty: World at War for yourself. Running on Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 engine, the game itself is being developed by Treyarch which has developed a number of the less acclaimed console Call of Duty titles. This will actually be Treyarch's first game in the series for the PC so we are hopeful that the team has learned something from their past experiences. Look for the game to ship to stores this fall.

Call of Duty: World at War gets official release date; new trailer download

Remember when we posted up rumors (via Electronic Gaming Monthly) that Activision might hold off on their next Call of Duty game until February 2009? Well, it looks like that particular nugget is wrong. Activision sent out their official press release today announcing Call of Duty: World at War and the news is that the game is scheduled currently for release this fall for the PC and other platforms.

As previously revealed, this new game, developed by Treyarch, will go back to the series' previous WWII war theater, although part of the game will head to the South Pacific as US forces take on the Japanese army. There's also co-op online for PC players for up to four players (no word on if it will also include co-op LAN play). The new game will also include the ranking and experience points features that were in Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 in both multiplayer and co-op modes. If you want to see some of the Pacific theater warfare you can download the new trailer now at Big Download. You can also check out some hands-on impressions at Joystiq.

Infinity Ward rumored to be working on a Science Fiction game

CVG reports that an "Infinity Ward insider" let slip that the studio is working on a Sci-Fi game. No specifics about the game were given, apart from the genre. Since Infinity Ward's portfolio exclusively includes Call of Duty games (the first, the second, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare), the gaming community is buzzing with speculation that this means that the Call of Duty series is going the space marine route after Call of Duty: World at War.

We're skeptical. Why? Because the insider also said that the Sci-Fi game might be unveiled at E3. It would be pretty silly to unveil Call of Duty: Future Warfare only a month after Call of Duty: World at War, even though Infinity Ward isn't helming World at War itself. So maybe Infinity Ward is finally branching out. You knew they had to get sick of Call of Duty sooner or later, right? More likely yet, maybe the barely-sourced quote is just a false rumor.

As unlikely as it is, though, it's still fun to imagine a Call of Duty game in which your squadmates scream: "They're coming out of the walls! They're coming out of the Goddamn walls!"

Call of Duty: World at War footage to be unveiled Friday

We've already seen some screenshots of Treyarch's Call of Duty 5 -- err, Call of Duty: World at War. You might be wondering "where's the footage" though, right? You can't judge a game by a video, it's true, but you surely can get a better sense with a video than with still images.

Well, it turns out the wait will be a short one. GameTrailers TV -- which first airs on the Spike TV cable channel, and later appears at www.gametrailers.com -- will debut World at War footage during this Friday's episode. The show airs at 1:00 AM EST (so, for many people, we suppose it'll technically be Saturday, but whatev). Check it out if you have any interest.

Better yet, just wait for it to pop up online. Let's face it -- this is a World War II shooter. It's hard to get excited about those anymore, no matter how much "reinvention" is promised. The modern desert setting is getting just as tired, though, so ... what next?

A brief chat with Maxis' Lucy Bradshaw on Spore Creature Creator
In 2005, in what was supposed to be an interesting but un-extraordinary panel at the Game Developers Conference, Will Wright, the near-legendary creator of Sim City and The Sims titles, revealed to a shocked audience his next full blown creation in playable form. That creation was Spore, a kind of evolution sim game where players could help make a complete space-faring civilization out of a single cell organism.

CoD 5 screens get leaked

Several screens from Treyarch's Call of Duty 5 have found their way to the internet by a few German websites. This NeoGAF thread has them all in one place for your viewing ease. The screens give us our first glimpse of the World War II Pacific Theater setting in all of its jungle-y glory. While the WWII setting is a bit of a letdown after CoD4's much-appreciated move to the modern era, the Pacific Theater is at least a little interesting. We have a feeling that guys hacking around with machetes will be an ongoing theme in CoD5. Oh and don't forget the samurai swords, there's even a screen showing off some possible melee action.

One other thing we can easily derive from the screenshots is that there's going to be a big, nasty flamethrower featured in the game. Whether or not players will actually get to use the flame-gushing weapon is of course unknown. We only hope that for the sake of everyone involved there is some flamethrowing action coming our way.

The Big Round-up: Tuesday, June 10

Your daily wrap-up of the hottest stories in PC gaming in the last 24 hours.

Call of Duty 5 news reveals "new" military theatre
Computer and Video Games has become the first web site to reveal the first details on the next game in Activision's Call of Duty shooter franchise. The game is subtitled World at War and as expected is being developed by Treyarch. It uses the Call of Duty 4 engine as created by Infinity Ward. While Activision had stated the game would be in a new military theater the story states that's isn't exactly true; the game will go back to the familiar WWII setting but will take place in the Pacific theater of war (with a side trip back to Europe to see the fall of Berlin by Russian forces).

Alone in the Dark completed, hits shelves later this month
Atari and Eden Games' Alone in the Dark has gone gold. All work on the game is finished, and the discs are being pressed. It will be available at retail on June 20th in Europe and June 24th in North America. The extravagant limited edition package will be released on those days as well.

Shipping this week: Hulk Smash!
While releases this week are lighter than usual, a smashing new title is hitting PC (we get paid per lame joke here apparently). Based on the new film surrounding the popular Marvel character, The Incredible Hulk hits PC on Tuesday as well as the rest of the week's releases that include the first downloadable episode of GameCock's film noir style action adventure game, Insecticide and a free content expansion for EVE Online.

Achievements coming to World of Warcraft?
One of the Xbox 360's biggest innovations is the use of "Achievements", those cool goals in every Xbox 360 game that can be made with points added to a player's Gamertag score. Valve has added similar achievements to Team Fortress 2. Now comes world that Blizzard might be planning to add something like Achievements to its hit MMO World of Warcraft.

The game aims to be darker and grittier than previous entries in the series and will have four-player co-op features for the first time. The article does not have a release date for the game; while Activision has previously stated it will be released this fall, a rumor from the Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine states it could be pushed back to February 2009.

Rumor: No new Call of Duty game in 2008?

Activision and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 turned into the biggest selling PC first person shooter game in 2007, beating out the heavily hyped competition of Valve's The Orange Box, Splash Damage and id's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Crytek's Crysis, and Epic's Unreal Tournament 3. Yet the next game in Activision's Call of Duty franchise might not make an appearance in 2008, at least according to the latest rumor column in Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine (and excerpted at 1Up.com).

While the official word from Activision's latest conference call is that the next Call of Duty game would be due out sometime this fall, the EGM rumor claims that developer Treyarch won't have the game ready to be released until February 2009. Details on the game are still top secret with Activision only saying that the game will take place in a new theater of war
