Respawn founders chat more about new venture; Activision responds

It's still in the embryonic stage at this point (just two employees, no game and no physical office) but the founders of the newly revealed Respawn Entertainment, Vince Zampella and Jason West, have still been hitting the interview circuit hard today. Our sister site Joystiq talked with the duo, who previously co-founded Infinity Ward and launched the Call of Duty first person shooter series with former publisher Activision.

While there is still no game dev under development yet, the new team won't be working on an established property for their new publisher Electronic Arts but rather on their own original projects. Respawn will also own the game's IP which should allow them to expand any game they make into other properties on their own (like movies, comic books, toys and the like) without having to go through EA. They will just be working on one game at a time, at least at first, and naturally they are starting up the hiring process.

Meanwhile Activision, who are currently in a legal battle with Zampella and West after the publisher dismissed them from Infinity Ward last month, issued their own reaction to the Respawn Entertainment announcement: "This agreement comes as no surprise to Activision given the myriad of improper activities detailed in the cross-complaint filed on Friday against Jason West and Vince Zampella. We look forward to continuing to work with Infinity Ward's deep bench of proven talent on exciting new projects."

Big Versus: Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare/Modern Warfare 2

Even though the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has taken critical hits from both fans and game journalists alike, sales of Infinity Ward's latest shooter title are supposedly higher than those of the previous game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. But how do these two games really stack up against each other? In our latest article in our Big Versus series we tackle that question head on as we compared the 2007 released Call of Duty 4 to Infinity Ward's latest entry in their series Modern Warfare 2.

Machinima clip turns FPS characters into reality TV contestants

Reality TV shows seem like they keep falling from a mythical reality TV show tree nowadays. One show we actually wish was real was created by a machinima team that put their efforts on YouTube. Top FPS puts a number of well know first person shooter characters together to see who is the best.

Yes, both we and the machinima makers know that Gears of War guy isn't really from a first person shooter (he apparently lied on his application). And how much does Barney from Half-Life 2 (acting as the host of Top FPS) look like Survivor's Jeff Propst? Anyway, mad props to these guys for their efforts. It makes us forget all about The Pick-Up Artist.

Activision resisted taking Call of Duty franchise to modern times

In hindsight it appears so obvious but a few years ago, Activision was "dead set" against having the Call of Duty franchise move out from its WWII shooter roots to the modern day era. In a article at Computer and Video Games (quoting a recent Official Playstation Magazine interview) Infinity Ward co-founder Vince Zampella admitted that if they had their way, Call of Duty 2 might have been their modern day shooter debut.

What happened? Zampella is quoted as saying that they went ahead with Activision's wishes, stating, "
. . . we'd get some dev kits for consoles in exchange for doing a World War 2 game. We always wanted to be on consoles and Activision saw us as more of a PC developer." Even for Call of Duty 4, Zampella stated Activision originally wanted yet another WWII shooter, saying "They were doing market research to show us we were wrong the whole time." Of course, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare turned out to be the most successful game in the series so far and Modern Warfare 2 is looking like it will be even more successful. Which proves that following "market research" blindly won't lead you anywhere.

Modern Warfare 2 reveals some of its multiplayer secrets

Yes, the single player campaign for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was actually pretty good but Infinity Ward's multiplayer modes and features were the big reason why the 2007 first person shooter was such a huge hit. Now Modern Warfare 2 is less than two months away and this week the development team let some press folks spend a few hours blowing each other up in multiplayer.

Our sister sites GameDaily and Joystiq got some hands-on time with the game this week and offers up their impressions. One of the cool new features is being able to store your killstreaks so you can pick which one of the bonuses you can unleash. That includes the AC-130 gunship that was in the single player campaign in Call of Duty 4. In Modern Warfare 2 you are actually in the gunship over the map killing enemies if you rack up 11 straight kills.

Overall it sound like the multiplayer portion of Modern Warfare 2 will be a refined version of Call of Duty 4's features and the PC version will have support for LAN play (something which nowadays you can't take for granted anymore).

GoGamer puts PC Ghostbusters and other games on sale

Even though PC owners may not be getting any multiplayer options in the just released Ghostbusters game, many feel that the $30 price for the single player action game is worth it. In their latest 48 Hour Madness sale, GoGamer.com has made that low price even lower to $25.90.

The sale, which ends at 3 am ET on Tuesday, has a number of other games on its list including Far Cry 2 for $14.90, Call of Duty 4 for $24.90, Prince of Persia for $14.90 and Tom Clancy's EndWar for $17.90. Our pick would be Painkiller Black Edition which got it's price cut to just $4.90.
