Big Versus: Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare/Modern Warfare 2

Even though the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has taken critical hits from both fans and game journalists alike, sales of Infinity Ward's latest shooter title are supposedly higher than those of the previous game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. But how do these two games really stack up against each other? In our latest article in our Big Versus series we tackle that question head on as we compared the 2007 released Call of Duty 4 to Infinity Ward's latest entry in their series Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare 2 reveals some of its multiplayer secrets

Yes, the single player campaign for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was actually pretty good but Infinity Ward's multiplayer modes and features were the big reason why the 2007 first person shooter was such a huge hit. Now Modern Warfare 2 is less than two months away and this week the development team let some press folks spend a few hours blowing each other up in multiplayer.

Our sister sites GameDaily and Joystiq got some hands-on time with the game this week and offers up their impressions. One of the cool new features is being able to store your killstreaks so you can pick which one of the bonuses you can unleash. That includes the AC-130 gunship that was in the single player campaign in Call of Duty 4. In Modern Warfare 2 you are actually in the gunship over the map killing enemies if you rack up 11 straight kills.

Overall it sound like the multiplayer portion of Modern Warfare 2 will be a refined version of Call of Duty 4's features and the PC version will have support for LAN play (something which nowadays you can't take for granted anymore).

Upcoming Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare mod takes a Star Wars turn

There have been lots and lots of Star Wars mods made for games; mods made from Doom and Quake and Battlefield 1942 and many. many more. Now the latest FPS to head to the Galactic Empire is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Thanks to a tweet from developer Infinity Ward, we got word of Galactic Warfare which is under development by the German-based mod team Black Monkeys.

You can check out a YouTube video with gameplay from the mod after the jump. It shows off some pretty impressive level and art design and we hope it's not one of these mod projects that ends up being halted by LucasArts or succumbing to the typical mod team malaise which ends with the mod not being completed.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 officially announced

It's not exactly a huge shock but it's still very cool to hear the official news. MTV Multiplayer reports that during a presentation for advertisers at Microsoft's in-game ad division Massive it was revealed that Activision will be releasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the fall of 2009.

While the report had no other details, it's likely that Infinity Ward is the developer for the game. They created the franchise and also were the team behind Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007 which was by far the most successful entry in the series. The title seems to suggest that the new game will be a direct sequel to the events in Call of Duty 4. The report also has reveals of other upcoming Activision games which are likely console only titles (including a James Bond themed racing game from Bizarre Creations).
