Rumors: Aliens FPS development halted [Update]; layoffs at Gearbox Software

Bad news always seem to come at the end of the week and this time is no exception. Shacknews is reporting through multiple but unnamed sources that there have been between 15 to 25 team members laid off at Dallas based Gearbox Software. The same report also states that development has "halted" on one of their upcoming projects, the Sega published first person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines (the article doesn't actually say the game has been cancelled).

The report states that part of the reason for the layoffs was due to the poor sales of Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, the third game in Gearbox's WWII tactical shooter series that was released last September by Ubisoft. However there's no word as to why development has stopped on the Aliens game. Sega first announced the game, and Gearbox's involvement, way back in December 2006 but only recently began to reveal info about the title, starting with a cover story in Game Informer magazine last February. Gearbox also has another game in development, the original first person shooter Borderlands, and also has at least one major unnamed game in the works.

Update: Shacknews's story has been updated with comments from Gearbox head Randy Pitchford who states, "Aliens isn't canned". He also states, "We've made some transformative changes and yes, that's meant some talent changes, but that's not the real story."

Phillips spins off amBX into stand alone business

The folks at Phillips have been promoting their game-oriented multi-media hardware amBX for some time and now the company is cutting the division's cords and letting it loose. In case you are not familiar with amBX it's basically a series of speakers, lights and fans that react with amBX enabled games like Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, Far Cry 2 and the upcoming Legendary and Velvet Assassin. This new business move will enable amBX to continue to expand to support more games as well as support films, TV shows and other media outlets

Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway PC delayed another week?

If you thought you were going to be able to play the PC version of Gearbox Software's WWII tactical shooter Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway next week, you may have to change your plans. Originally the PC port was to be released day-and-date with the console versions (which were released this past week) but word came down from publisher Ubisoft that the PC version was pushed back for a release on Sept. 30.

Now it appears that online retailers like Gamestop have changed the ship date yet again and if their dates are correct it looks like another week delay to October 7. Valve's Steam web site also shows the game as not being available for purchase on their game download service until October 8.

Big Download's most anticipated Fall 2008 PC games

While the game industry is beginning to understand that they can sell high profile games any time of the year the truth is that the time period between the first of September and the first week of December remains the biggest time of the year for new games to be released. 2008 seems to be no exception to this rule as PC gamers have a ton of new and promising titles to choose from this year.

So which games are we most looking forward to playing this fall? Well it so happens that we have created a feature gallery that has our picks for the PC game titles we most want to play in the next few months. That list include a long awaited MMO, a new expansion pack to the biggest MMO, an alternate history RTS game, a number of great looking first person shooters, a post-apocalyse RPG and a title that some are already declaring "the greatest game ever made." (in fact you can get a clue as to one of the games on our list from this custom case mode we saw at QuakeCon).

Our list of games is ordered by their scheduled release dates. Keep in mind while checking our picks that release dates can and do change at the last minute. Our picks represent the best info on these dates at the time of the posting of this article but if any changes are announced afterward we will report on them on the news site.
