Gearbox Software talks Aliens, Borderlands, Brothers In Arms and more

While the relaunch of Duke Nukem Forever by Gearbox Software was obviously the big news that the developer was promoting at PAX Prime 2010 this past weekend, Gearbox was also talking about a ton of other upcoming projects at its PAX Prime panel on Sunday. Our sister site Joystiq attended and got a mouthful of info.

Gearbox's most immediate project is the fourth DLC mini-expansion Claptrap's New Robot Revolution. However Gearbox also has plans for a free patch to the FPS-RPG hybrid that will raise the level cap to 69. That patch should be out in October around the time the Borderlands Game of the Year edition is scheduled to ship to stores.

And what about Aliens: Colonial Marines, the movie-based shooter that was announced way back in December 2006? Aside from a Game Informer cover story in early 2008 little has been show of that game. However Pitchford said he recently chatted with the head of Sega of America, the publisher of the game, and said that Sega was still committed to the title. Pitchford said, "We're not going to let this dream die, it's going to happen.

Brothers in Arms, Gearbox's original WWII tactical shooter series, is also alive and well at the developer. While nothing specific was announced, Gearbox hinted that it might take the series in some different directions with Pitchford saying, "We want to make sure we know we've got it right before we tell you what we're doing."

And finally, when asked about the unannounced game that is listed on Gearbox's own site as, "'look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger' kind of big", Pitchford answered, "That is not about Duke. That is one of the unannounced Gearbox projects." Interesting.

What is "Z-Day"?

Gearbox Software has been fairly quiet in the last few months. The developer of 2009's sleeper first person shooter-RPG hit Borderlands is apparently done with releasing downloadable content for that game and their only other announced title, the long delayed shooter Aliens Colonial Marines, remains under a cone of silence.

However the company's official web site shows that Gearbox has at least three other titles in some form of development. And they have been making the effort to trademark some titles. One of the titles listed under the US Patent and Trademark Office web site is for something called "Z-Day". While the title certainly invokes an image of a zombie-themed war game it could mean, well, anything. We just hope Gearbox lets the world know what they have been up to fairly soon.

Ubisoft offers WWII game bundle on Steam

The World War II genre is still a popular place to set games. Ubisoft has published a number of WWII themed games from action flying titles to naval simulations to tactical shooters. Today the publisher has gathered a number of these games on Steam into one game bundle, the WWII Collection.

Ubisoft has put nine games in this collection including all the games in the Brothers in Arms series as well as the two games in the Blazing Angels series and games in the Silent Hunter franchise. While the games would total $129.91 if bought separately you can get the entire bundle now for the much lower price of $39.99

Tons of Ubisoft games to be added to GameTap

The PC game subscription-download service GameTap has been adding more and more games to its library of titles. A few months ago it announced it would be adding titles from Microsoft and today the company announced a new deal with Ubisoft that renews its current contract and will add over 50 Ubisoft games to its subscription service.

GameTap plans to add titles like the Brothers In Arms series, the Rainbow Six Vegas series, the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series, Far Cry 2, Assassin's Creed and more to its monthly subscription service. In addition Ubisoft games will be added to GameTap's digital download store.

Brothers In Arms games on sale on Steam this weekend

Steam has now crancked out their regular weekly sale for their PC game download service and this time the sale involves Brothers In Arms, the acclaimed and historically accurate WWII tactical shooter series from developer Gearbox Software and publisher Ubisoft.

For this weekend only, all three of the Brothers in Arms games (Earned In Blood, Road to Hill 30 and Hell's Highway) have had their prices cut by 50 percent off their normal Steam price. There's also a new Brothers in Arms bundle pack where you can get all three games for just $19.99. That represents a 60 percent overall price cut for the games.

Feature: Turning Games Into Comics - Part 1

With the huge success that the New York Comic Con had this past weekend, it's clear that comic books and games have lots of links and a shared audience. We have posted up a feature about comic books that we think should be turned into games but the truth is more and more games are being adapted and expanded in comic book form.

Various publishers have released game-based comics over the years and today in the first part of a two part series Big Download looks at just some of the attempts to turn games into four-color entertainments. Stay tuned as we will have even more examples on Tuesday. Update: The second part of the feature is now up.

Review: Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway starts with a very long intro cinematic. It got to the point where we seriously started to wonder if there was going to be a game or if we should microwave some popcorn. However, the intros does its job in setting up the story, which is a fictional account of a platoon of American soldiers helping each other through the hardships of war. While there's plenty of action, bloodshed and explosions to go around - the characters and the bond they share is one of the most compelling aspects of the game. This is a huge achievement considering that many first-person shooter games, especially ones set in World War II's European Theater, are starting to look very much alike.
