The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom announced

It's one of the longest running series in PC game history and now a new Settlers game has just been announced. The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom will once again be developed by the game's creators at Blue Byte Software and will ship to stores via publisher Ubisoft in the spring of 2010.

As you can see from the above screenshot, The Settlers 7 will use an all new graphics engine to show off the latest version of the strategy-sim series. Set in Europe during the early Renaissance period of history, players will learn to expand their fictional kingdom through military, science or trade routes. Look for both a single player campaign along with co-op and adversarial online features. Support for user created content will also be a part of The Settlers 7.

GoG.com adds Heritage of Kings: The Settlers to library

GoG.com continues to add Ubisoft published games to its library of DRM-free PC games for purchase. Today the download service adds Heritage of Kings: The Settlers to its line-up. The 2005 released RTS game from developer Blue Byte Software is one of the more recently released titles added to the GoG.com site.

This game is actually the fifth in the Settlers series from Blue Byte and took a different direction in terms of gameplay from the first four titles in the series. While you still have to build a settlement there's support for upgrading building and developing refineries to use resources better. The GoG.com version sells for $9.99 and comes with the game's soundtrack along with wallpapers and avatars.

Boot Disk: The Settlers 2

Sometimes you just need to sit down, slide a floppy into your A: drive, and enjoy gaming retro style. We know this all too well! That's why we have a list of the best and brightest from days long gone. These are some of our favorite games of all time, and we're sure that you'll love them as much as we do, if not more. Welcome to Boot Disk, and enjoy the retro ride!

Some games are good. Some games are so good that, in fact, that they virtually define their entire legacy in a single game and wait for it to waste away through sequels that "just don't get it." Games that are held to such a high standard that nobody, especially not the original developers, can outdo them. This is the fraternity that The Settlers 2 belongs to. One of the best strategy games ever made, its mixture of entrancing pixel art, peaceful economics, and low-key combat helped create the feeling of zen in those who played it. While the developers have since moved on and tried to continue the game in many sequels, none have quite hit the mark the way The Settlers 2 has. It's time to take a look at what made Settlers 2 so compelling.
