BioShock 2 DLC PC decision reversed; Protector Trials and Minerva's Den coming after all

A few weeks ago PC gamers were understandably upset when 2K Games announced that the final two paid downloadable content packs for BioShock 2 would not be released for the PC port of the first person shooter as they were for the Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts. Now that decision has been reversed with 2K Games' Elizabeth Tobey announcing on the game's official message boards that the Protector Trials and Minerva's Den DLC packs will be coming to the PC after all.

Why the change of heart? Basically, it came down to the game's PC owners expressing their opinions on this move (i.e. they didn't like it) to 2K Games. These opinions caused 2K Games to start thinking differently on the matter with Tobey stating, " ... given the conversations we've had over the past two weeks, we've decided to go back and finish the PC patch and Protector Trials." The PC patch and Protector Trials are both expected to be released sometime in December. Furthermore, the Protector Trials DLC will be a free download. Minerva's Den is going to take a bit longer but Tobey stated, " ... we have reallocated resources to work on completing the project so PC gamers can have this experience in Rapture."

BioShock 2 PC won't get Minerva's Den or Protector Trials DLC after all

In a surprising about face, PC owners of the first person shooter BioShock 2 won't get access to the final two downloadable content packages, Protector Trials and Minerva's Den, after all. In a post on the game's official message boards, a 2K Games spokesperson stated that "timing and technical issues" were to blame but details were not revealed.

The Protector Trials and Minerva's Den DLC packs were supposed to be single player extensions of the game developed by 2K Marin. Both were released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game and both were originally announced as coming to the PC as well. We have emailed 2K Games to get more info on why these two DLC packs have now been scrapped for the PC version. In addition, it appears that there won't be any playlists added for the multiplayer DLC maps and that sounds for the game's vending machines won't be added for any versions of BioShock 2.

BioShock movie is still being "actively" worked on, says Ken Levine

There have been some publicly reported budget issues with getting the planne BioShock movie up to production speed. However that doesn't mean the adaptation of Irrational Games' 2007 first person shooter is stalled. Speaking to, of all places, the Washington DC sports radio station DC 106.7, Irrational's head man Ken Levine stated that while he wasn't sure the movie version will ever be made, " ... it's something we are actively discussing, quite actively, and actively working on."

The film was announced by Universal in 2008 with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski signed on to direct. However in 2009 the film was put on hold due to concern that it would be too expensive to produce. Later that year it was revealed that 28 Days Later's director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo would be stepping in to direct the movie with Verbinski moving to a producer role. In June 2010, Verbinski stated that he, Universal and Fresnadillo were still working to " . . . get the budget down."

BioShock 2: Minerva's Den DLC coming this fall

PC players still haven't gotten access to the last BioShock 2 DLC but that's not stopping developer 2K Marin from revealing the latest and final DLC release for the team's first person shooter sequel. Minerva's Den, due out sometime this fall, will be a single player narrative mini-expansion for the game.

This DLC will put players in the role of a new and unnamed character who explores a previously unseen district in the city of Rapture. Your goal is to help Brigid Tenenbaum in defeating a dictator that has taken control of the district, Rapture Central Computing. You will get new weapons and a new Plasmid to defend yourself but new Splicers, security bots and a new version of Big Daddy will oppose you. In fact you can see him in the above screenshot. Pricing was not announced.

BioShock 2 Protector Trials for PC delayed

Fans of BioShock 2 for the PC will have to wait a little longer to get the promised single player-themed Protector Trials DLC mini-expansion. While the DLC was released earlier this week for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the first person shooter sequel, the PC version has been delayed.

A post on the official BioShock 2 message boards from the community manager for 2K Games states, "I don't have a date for the PC patch for the DLC on GFWL - stay tuned."As we have reported before the Protector Trials will add six new single player levels to the game as you have to defend your Little Sister against wave of Splicers.

This Week In PC Games: August 2-8

Perhaps because the PC game industry is still trying to recover from last week's release of StarCraft II, there are no new stand alone PC games that are scheduled to be released this week, either in downloadable form or in retail stores. However there is a new DLC mini-expansion that's due for release on Tuesday for one of 2010's big titles.

BioShock 2 Protector Trials: This downloadable expansion to 2K Marin's first person shooter sequel will be released via Games For Windows Live on Tuesday. This single player expansion adds six levels as you have to defend your Little Sister against waves of Splicers. More info on the Protector Trials can be found at the game's official community site.

BioShock 2's Protector Trials begin on August 3

Even though BioShock 2 didn't sell as many copies as 2K Games execs would have liked, it looks like the publisher still wants to give players of the first person shooter some more to play with. Today the company announced plans to release Protector Trials, a single player downloadable expansion for the game that will be released August 3 via Games for Windows Live for 400 Microsoft points (about $5).

The six levels in Protector Trials will let players back into the Big Daddy suit as he has to deal with waves of Splicers who want to grab the ADAM that is being gathered by the Little Sister. The levels will be based on some of the familiar locations in BioShock 2 and will also feature seven new achievements and new unlockable content. The press release that announced Protector Trials stated that more single player content for BioShock 2 is in the works.
